I need a new PC (Help)

Well... I hate to say it but I can't play the new update. My Old Compaq is just not getting well enough frame rates.

I have no experience in building a PC and would like some info on where to purchase one custom online. I would also like to retain WIN XP.

I'm looking for something on the cheaper side and I would not like to spend over 8 or $900.

Building is as easy as screwing a few parts together and plugging in some connectors.  There's not much you can screw up.

The best place for buying parts is newegg.com.

For 8-900 you can build a really nice machine and re-use your copy of XP.  You could also re-use your hard drives, optical drives, etc. to either build a better machine or reduce the cost.

How would I retain my copy of Win XP? I don't have a Disk for it, it came installed on my machine.

You can't. M$ allows one XP license per machine. What you'll save by building a machine will more than cover the cost ($139) of XP Pro 64 bit.

What he might consider doing is running the Windows 7 RC on a new system until he gets comfortable with it - he'll have until March 2010.

That way his existing system can stay "untouched".

If that's TilDeath's new site, I'd also recommend going through him.  It looks like they have a computer for $979, so a little out of your price range, but at least not by a mile.

I have no idea how well it would run AH, but I'm sure TilDeath could tell you.  I had him build me a machine several months ago and I couldn't be happier.  I spent slightly more than I would have building it myself, but the time, effort, and worry saved were more than worth it to me.

I don't play many newer games, Silent Hunter III, Combat Mission, Strike Fighters Series, CIV IV are my bread & butter.

I do use Adobe CS3 (all the time) and 3D Studio Max (less frequently).

you COULD just keep the hard drive on your computer and put it in your new one,that way all you would have to do would be update the drivers and such for new hardware

It should run all that and then some perfectly and more for the next few years.  It's close to what I had him build for me a while back and I run maxed with shaders on and solid FR, no stutters.

Quite well I would imagine. Ask him to bump up the clock on that puppy and it will scream. (Might be extra). However, you may need to get a copy of an OS. I didn't see one listed.

As I said in another thread you can add/upgrade components to your current case that will more than adequately play the game at full settings and still have some minor room for later upgrades for around $230........ if you have $900 in your budget you can build a sys that would scream this game for  years to come

Personally if your only upgrading for the sake of the game........ save yourself the other $670 or so and build what you need for the game........
