I dont know what was done, but I played for almost an hour at 5040x1050 yesterday, which is quite an improvement over the 3840,1200. The perspective is much better, and sitting in the cockpit, I can "see" the wingtips with my peripheral vision.
Prior to the new graphics engine upgrade, my vid card would pork out after about 3 minutes in that resolution.
