I use Avira. Works great. Updates automatically once a day( supposedly there is a hack to turn it off in free version) in the free version. Easy to live with, and works good.

The newest Norton came with my PC. I used to not like it but the one I have now seems rock solid and very easy to use. It doesn't hinder game play at all on my system. But it's not free, I will however renew my subscription.

you can turn AVG completely off by disabling all the services in the service console..... then the only thing that will run on startup is the avgrsx which is primarily the registry scanner....  once it runs at startup it doesnt run again while computer is on.....you can end process in the task manager and it goes away

by turning them off in the service console I mean set the services to manual and reboot

NOD32, nothing better IMO.  Small footprint, excellent detection.

Avira is the best FREE av software out there, but it will pepper you with stupid questions when it detects anything, and even experienced users might click the wrong answer to these poorly worded dialog boxes. But it has a good detection rate.

NOD32 is the best "pure" antivirus program for a gaming machine, meaning it is lean and mean, has good detection, good "smarts" to just do the correct action almost all of the time, and it will barely slow your system down.

If you want something that's more comprehensive, Norton Antivirus 2009 or Norton Internet Security 2009 is the best pick, offering good smarts like ESET, an automatic "game mode" that will tell the product to go idle during full-screen gaming, and great detection rates.

I know this because I tested all these products for the July issue of CPU Magazine.

Norton itself is a virus. I avoid it always.

Ditto and the same for AVG.

I will ONLY recommend NOD32.

I had Symantec's top of the line Norton 360 Security software suite installed, and it was as crappy as could be.   Significantly slowed down my PC, and did not prevent it from getting a major infection that even installed a backdoor on my PC.

I replaced it with the Free AVG software, which has not let me down yet.  My system also runs noticeably faster with it installed too.   Norton is also quite expensive, and is no where close to being worth the money that they charge for it.

I'm also using the excellent Free COMODO firewall, which is available for both 32 and 64 bit systems.  On top of that, I have WinPatrol, Windows Defender, SpyWare Blaster, and Ad-Aware all installed too.

Even with all of those additional programs, my system still does much better than it did with the Norton 360 Security Suite installed.

Wikianswers contains instructions on how to disable the ads in Avira free. You just need to block avnotify.exe from working.
