A good number of our squad are work mates. We all share the same interest in the game and we also wanted to honour two Canadian Squadrons of WWII, to which our members have an attachment.

Daddog has it right about us Dogs.

There is nothing like seeing the bunch formed up in a big buff strike with lots of chatter on RW.

I'll never forget the night a bunch of us were gunning a B17. (Back in brand W you could have more than 1 gunner) It was my turn to pilot & I had it on autoclimb. Told the guys I was going for a fresh drink.

Well the b17 was headed straight for a big mountain peak when I got back. Ever so gently I played with the autopilot speed till I could see we would just hit the top.

RW started getting excited as we got closer & closer to the peak. The guys are all yelling "GHOSTH" as I roll it into a barrel roll & squeeze it over the peak inverted. Teeerex screamed!

I was laughing so hard I almost crashed!

THAT is what being in a squad is all about!

Fun, Fun, & Fun.  Being online with other bastards and hopefully getting on RW is all that matters.  Flying together like a band of idiots, or organized and taking a base, or flying against each other and gloating profusly when shooting each other down.  It's all good.

In order:
Historical recreation
(Which leads to..)
Respect for those who fought with honor and country
(Which leads to...)
Common interest that draws squaddies
(which leads to..)
Comraderie
(which leads to...)
Lifetime friendships

Arena domination? I think of CO's that surround themselves with known talent when I think of that factor.  Personally, I'd rather have someone whos a lousy shot, but a great person/friend than I would with someone who's got a lousy attitude, bad vibs within the community and alot of skillzzzzzz.

Interesting replies...thanks guys!

The 13th TAS has gone thru some phases for sure. I'm extremely competitive and have a hard time tolerating failure...yes you're correct, it's a character flaw for sure :)

Inspite of my shortcomings, squad life over the past ten years has been one of lifes good things. I have flown with some of the guys for 10 years...been to their homes, they to mine and shared tragedies as well as side-splitting laughter.

Currently we fly as a squad, first, because we are friends...like a old pair of shoes, nothing else quite feels right.

Secondly, we strive to do our best as a squad in whatever we choose to do...call it pride I guess, we just enjoy kickin tail :)

Thirdly, if ya want to get something done in this sim, a group effort sure don't hurt the cause any :)

Thanks again for the replies...Cyas Up!

Don't worry guys... I'm working on Rude.

I can alreay report this much progress:  He used to go into week-long crying jags if one...just one... of his bullets missed when he unloaded a burst into someone.

Now he gets over it in less than a day.

Stay tuned for further updates.  :D

Daddog I was an original Red Falcon.Who were you flying with(RF)?I flew 4-6am weekdays and sun.nights because of my work schedule. That's probably why I don't remember your handle?Who was supposed to give you an invite?

Killjoy and gorf were also RF members. The most fun I have had in flight sims was with the RF.

Hi Frodo!
If I recall you were one of the newest members of the RF's at that time. This was back in 97. I had been in WB for a few months and had met some of the RF on Kali doing WB h/h. When I signed up for an account I first flew Red. I was told to hang around and try to join them on some missions. I do believe I even sent an e-mail to the C.O., but it has been too long to remember for sure. In any case after a few weeks I gave up and started flying green because another friend on Kali "snoopy" started flying for the frogs. Soon after that "docdog" aka "buddi" convinced me to start a squad.

My orignial call was "jwg11"....lol I think! It has been so long!

When I started the Fat Drunk Bastards I did it with honor and chivalry in mind. My job as a CO is a though one as sometimes I have to pull the squad together in the moments of grief; but those times when we do succeed, its all worth the effort.
We, the FDB, are based on truth and friendship. We are like a band of brothers, ready to stand firm and take a blow for any other in the squad, or a friend of the squad. Thats what we are all about.

Daddog those days were a blast.

I started w/b in the fall of 95.I worked with deft and he got me hooked. He started a squad and there were only 3-4 of us.We merged with chaz who had a similar number and became the Red Falcons VVS.I started off as ronp and then frdo.

We were red in the early days and later switched to gold. You went from red to a frog. How could you!   :D
