Rail Guns
« on: August 15, 2009, 06:34:58 PM »
Okay, this would be a cool thing to add to the game if nothing else than to demolish enemy towns from 500 miles away. Rail guns, the Germans used them against Soviets in the Middle of WWII. Perhaps these could be used like the ME-163 and only be used at certain bases, close to the HQ, same rules of the CVs would apply, highest pilot score would get control or the giant. Respond with what you think.

You must mean something else, even today rail guns are only in design stages and are slated for 2025 (I think...) to be mounted on U.S. destroyers.

Still 500miles... maybe the Gustav? I don't think even that could do anywhere near that kind of range.

I can only imagine the time and fun of hauling that around on railroad carts.

The Gustav had a maximum range of around 38-48 kilometers depending on which shell was fired. Even the Langer Gustav only had a projected maximum range of around 190 km according to some sources. This was firing long range rocket projectiles that only weighed 680 kilos. It was never even completed however.

(Image removed from quote.)

I can only imagine the time and fun of hauling that around on railroad carts.

Needed several trains for transport, and several weeks to prepare firing site, set up the rails and assemble the gun.

Pretty sure the Gustav and Dora were the biggest guns of not only WWII, but likely ever. Not to mention it took several weeks to setup and at a snail's pace (see what I did there?) of about 1 round an hour, I don't see if having much use in AH.

Well, a barrel lenght of >100 feet is pretty large ;). The K12 had a longer barrel than even the Dora.

Okay, well the reload length of an hour is pretty extreme, id say 30 minutes at most, although i don't know much about them, just seen them somewhere before. Just want your comments if good idea or bad. ty

How do they compare in size to the guns on the Yamato class BBs?

The K12 and Dora barrels were about 50% longer

Small comparison of K12, Dora (railway guns) and the Yamato's guns:
