Ok one more question detailing 2 problems with new system.
« on: August 22, 2009, 11:20:00 PM »
First off this is my first SATA only rig that I have put together. I spent what I thought was quite a bit of time reading, reading and asking questions but never asked about this possibility that has apparently turned into a reality for me and is now a problem.

First problem with new system that needs to be answered to help me once the next problem is fixed:
Everything works now that I have the cable issue figured out. BUT when I get into the Windows 7 installation screen I get an error that the CD/DVD drivers aren't there. BUT Windows loaded fine to get to that point it just will not proceed. Any ideas? DVD Drive in question is an LG GH22 DVD Burner, model number: GH22LS40 I may have to update the firmware by loading the drive into my existing computer and then remount it in the new one but if anyone can help that is the second step at the moment.

BIGGEST PROBLEM....Bootmgr missing when I try to get the Win7 disk to load now. The above problem is one that I am going to have to put on the back burner now. I have to figure out how to make this one work now. The drive that I have is a Seagate - 1TB Model: ST310005N1A1AS-RK. How this happened goes to the problem above. I was unable to find a driver anywhere (shouldn't need one right?) for the DVD drive. Well when I went all the way out of the installation screens I rebooted the computer and got a screen that said I had put in a new CPU....(WTF?!?! OVER!) Where did that come from? So I cheched and rechecked the seating of the HSF mount on the mother board and there was zero movement on that big arse CoolerMaster V8. Anyway I move into the BIOS and re-establish the settings like the computer forced me to do since I had put in a new CPU or so it said. Then I reboot and get all the way through and the last line AFTER posting good says..."Bootmgr is missing" Ctrl-Alt-Del to restart...I do that and I get it again, and again and again, etc... So like a good boy I go bang my head on the wall and say it AGAIN only this time out loud...WTF OVER!

So here I sit with my old system sitting where the new one was supposed to be humming along tonight wondering what the heck can I do to fix this problem. Anyone that can help me I would greatly appreciate it.

Hmmm...you know what you're describing sounds suspiciously like the SATA chipset on your mobo isn't loading properly during the install. Would you happen to know if that board is fully supported by Windows 7? It's still in beta technically so it's possible that the newest mobos aren't included in the built in driver list...check to see if there is a Windows7 SATA driver somewhere for that board.

Otherwise go into the bios and see if there is a way of putting the drives into "legacy mode"...of course that doesn't give you full SATA capbilities but it will get that system up and running.

I didn't try the legacy mode that is in my BIOS for the SATA parts. I will try that in the morning...or tomorrow after I have prayed to the Good Lord for guidance and drank my holy whiskey....ummm holy water.

You shouldn't be facing any problems with SATA and win7. The only possible problems that come to mind are:

a) wrong bios settings, meaning your dvd drive is not the boot drive
b) faulty hardware, meaning your dvd-rom or dvd-rom drive is broken
c) ancient el-cheapo motherboard - you didn't upgrade an old motherboard or buy a discount 1997 model did you? Oh lordy.

It's not just the fact that it's SATA, it's EVGA X58 SLI LE i7 920 that may require drivers similar to the "raid drivers" needed by WinXP at install time. No problems at all recognizing SATA chipsets from as far back as 2005 that I have seen...but what about the stuff that has been released with the newest generation of cpu's?

GO to EVGA's website and upgrade your BIOS.  Here is a link for a  bootable DVD.  This is the whole problem nothing else. http://www.evga.com/support/drivers/default.asp?switch=2.  For some reason the x58s stall on install if the BIOS is a certain one.  This corrects that problem.  Get the First listing, E758_SZ2F.iso  You will need a DVD/CD burning utility that accepts iso files.  Burn the DVD, place in the system you have the board in, make sure your DVD is your first boot device.  Follow the on screen prompts.  After the BIOS is flashed remove the DVD and start with your Win 7 install.  Should not have this problem again.

This is peculiar to this board only.  Has nothing to do with Win 7 or Vista.

Actually if this is a new board it's faulty and the manufacturer is responsible for this fix.

Thanks TD I knew there was a BIOS update for the X58's but after spending HOURS and HOURS looking all over the EVGA site and everywhere else I could not find anything. Hopefully this system will be up and running today.

Resche, I suspect that your DVD drive is probably defective, based upon the fact that it wouldn't boot at all from the DVD when you had a fan powered from the same power cable.

A fan should not have impacted the operation of the DVD at all.  Even a fan that won't spin up shouldn't draw more than an amp at max  - and a running fan about 250 mA (at max!)

It might be defective Ghastly but I have to give this other a try first since I need to get this sucker running today while the wife ack is away. Her rule is as long as she doesn't see it; she won't hold it against me...meaning she will put $xxx.xx+$xx.xx+$xxx.xx+$xxx.xx+$xx.xx+$xxx.xx=$x,xxx.xx together and then she gets to go spend that in clothes, shoes or some other frivolous item. The bank account just doesn't allow for those items being purchased all the time though...hehehe!

On another note...in hitting that link TD I get to a page that says:

Back to current drivers selection

I just got off the phone with EVGA tech support...and he says there is not a BIOS update that he has for the X58 SLI LE Board at this time but there may be one released soon since there haven't been any real issues with the board. I am going to try the DVD drive in another system first just to see if the drive is bad. If it is then I will be making a run to Best Buy and grabbing a new one ASAP.

:rofl  And where were you with this info 2 days ago?

Here I was gonna tell him I showed an uber geek buddy of mine this issue and he said he had the same issues with the exact same board, even the bios update didn't work, so he returned everything he bought except for the PSU and case, then ordered an Nforce 790i mobo from XFX...it works like a charm.

OK the DVD drive works in the old system. Just plugged into the SATA port and psu and it played a DVD and a game CD and DVD without any problem.

Time to go back to square one.

Burn a linux dvd and try to boot from that. If it works your win7 dvd may be bad. Sometimes if you burn at full speed to low quality dvd-roms you get errors on disk. In that case you need to reburn the win7 iso at slower speed.

If even the linux dvd won't boot then it's a sure indication of some hardware problem. Quality of dvd media, drive and/or compatability with motherboard. Or still, wrong settings.
