Have fun with it Mike.  Myself I love playing a good ol' flat top.  You can take it with you on a moments notice, and play anytime/anywhere you'd like.  Unlike drums...(kind of a lot of crap to get together)

Don't feel sorry for Stalwart.  He's my older brother and can play great.  He just happenend to know a lot of other talented people and is humble.  :aok

On top of that he was "loaned"(given) a Gibson Les Paul 20+years ago that is sweeter than any chick on the planet.  hmmm lemme think about that statement...Well, I stick by that.  That guitar is sweet.  It was owned by Peter Frampton.  Mother of pearl on the neck.  Heavy body.  Dang.  He even put flat wound strings on it to make it the smoothest thing I've ever come across.  

Further, he let me borrow it in 2001.  I had it a few years.  What a beast.  Can you imagine letting your little bro borrow something like that?

I took it in for a tune up to a guy in Dallas that worked on a lot of Les Pauls.  He loved it.

The best thing about it is that it gets played.  It's not in a glass case, it gets used.

Learn the Am and Cm open chords:

Am            Cm

0               0
1               1
2               0
2               2
0               3
don't touch the E string (thickest).

Strum: down down up (pause), up down up.

Don't give up either.  It really does take hard work to learn how to play.  You're fingers will stop hurting I promise.  Learn on an acoustic and you'll shred on an electric.

That's a nice guitar.  Used to have a couple of Ibanez electrics, loved them.

It gets a lot easier after your left hand gets used to making the chords.  After a few months it starts to come naturally.

I learned by picking up little bass riffs - Smoke on the Water, Dazed & Confused  - while learning the chords at the same time.  This way I was able to keep myself amused when I wasn't practicing chord shapes. 

You can play some rudimentary blues riffs too just using the top two strings.   Strum both, keeping the top one open and alternate between 2 and 4 on the A string, throwing in 5 for a turnaround.

Then after a few months you learn the hard thing isn't the left hand at all, it's the strumming and picking with the right hand.

Another tip is that it is always better to play for 15 minutes every day than it is to play for hours once a week.

Get your fingers fretting notes, forming chords and get your strumming hand coordinated with your fret hand.

Have a guitar in your hand as often as you can. Even if you're not practicing hard, just keep your hands moving.

SO true...

Years ago I would do the progression I mentioned all the time, whenever I was sitting watching TV, whatever. My girlfriend at the time would let me do it even when watching a movie together lol...

one day my guitar broke and for about 2 months I was going nuts, didn't have the money to fix it.... She got so sick of me fidgeting she bought me a guitar just so I could keep doing that stuff ROFL.

Buy a metronome

and do exercises like someone else said

 1.2.3.4 . 4.3.2.1 - move down a string and do it again until you get to the high e.  Then go 4.3.2.1 . 1.2.3.4 on every string up to the low e

Move up a fret and do it again. 

you can do any variation you like  for example -  1.2.1.4 . 1.3.1.4

Your fingers will hurt the first few days.
