Patch 8 stuttering and memory
« on: August 29, 2009, 12:39:01 PM »
Just a couple of issues I've bene having since patch 7.  I never had any of the stuttering at all and everything was great for me.  Patch 7 introduced some stuttering and it is a bit lessened from patch 8 but it's not gone.  It's not making the game unplayable at all, but it is somewhat irritating, and I keep noticing it rather than focusing on the situation around my plane.  I know I need to upgrade my vid card soon, and I plan to in the next couple of months but until then I'm stuck with this one.

Another thing that I noticed the two days ago is that before my system always showed the vid mem usage in the area of 160s.  I don't remember the specific numbers because it has never been any sort of an issue to me.  Since patch 8 (I didn't check it in patch 7 sadly enough) I've noticed that during a flight my video memory used slowly increases throughout the flight until it gets into the very high 190s. It seems like the stuttering starts after a few minutes of flight.  I don't know that and I'm not sure of a way to test it that would remove my bias, but that is how it seems to me to be.  When I get shot down, the usage goes immediately back down into the 150s or 160s.  Next hop it starts all over again.

Like I say, this isn't making it unplayable for me, it's just an irritant really.  Ideally I'd like to see it go away though.  I have full faith in HTC that they'll get everything worked out given enough time.  I'm just posting this as a report and hopefully to get some suggestions to help with this stuttering and the climbing memory usage.

Also, I'm using the high res pack and running at 1024 textures.  Screen res is 1680x1050.  Detailed ground on, detailed water off local water reflections off, bump mapping off shadows off.  I have the ground detail slider set at about a mile and the object detail all the way up.  I've been running fps from pegged at 59 down to the mid 40s at the absolute least.  No problems with frame rates at all.  Hope there's nothing I left out.

Just noticed also, the clipboard stutters when it goes away too.  Instead of just shrinking away like it used to it sort of jitters away now.  Not unplayable, just annoying.  Is there anything I might be able to do to take care of this?

Page File: 649MB used, 3290MB available

heya maddafinga, your above listed pagefile is extremely large with the Operating system listed as in use: Windows XP...........

you might want to check your processes of whats running ........

CTRL-ALT-DEL  (as if you didn't know) brings up task manager......... this will show your # of processes if you are down around say 24 or 25 or even less you should be fine..........but something is hogging up the page file........

go to www.blackviper.com  and check out his windows xp processes/services list.........to help you tweak them down.......

most of us run Windows XP around 18 to 21 processes...........with pagefile used around 200mb or less.........

you also have your soundcard turned down to basic........3/4's of the way in DirectX should get you a Standard setting........100% gets you Full setting........

good luck to ya , hope this helps!!!  :salute

edit: I myself have always set my pagefile size to the same amount both on minimal & maximum .......and check the manually controlled option......

this way has in my personal opinion caused me less heartache verses most other users of the game.........especially with stutter problems.........again my personal opinion/experience and Do It At Your Own Risk......

Now I don't know if this makes any difference or not but I pulled that dxdiag in the middle of the day when the girlfriend and her daughter both had been on their accounts.  That is possibly why the paging file is larger than it should be.  When I play, I reboot first then I run fsautostart to get myself down to 18 processes, then I start TrackIR and then AH2.  So I play with a very very clean system.  I don't know if the paging file would still be oversided or not in that case.  I can always change it though.  I'll do just about anything to get this taken care of.  Thanks for the advice.  I really want to get this cleared up.

Can you try the 190.62 drivers from your video card manufacturer?
If you like the Sick Puppy Custom Sound Pack the please consider contributing for future updates by sending a months dues to Hitech Creations for account "Chalenge." Every little bit helps.

I'll look to see.  I didn't know new ones were out.

Really I need a new vid card, but that's a couple of month away from happening.

Shazam!!
Looking at your dxdiag and then looking at mine gave me an idea.  I looked at my video settings in Windows and solved my stuttering: I set the video resolution in Windows at or above the game video setting (for me & you) of 1680X1050.  Lo, And Behold! Stuttering stopped. Some kind of conflict is gone now (memory usage went back down too).
Many Thanks  Maddafinga!

I still have the stuttering too, even with the new vid drivers from nvid. But Alt-Tabbing in and out resolves it.

Well I loaded up the new drivers yesterday, and they seemed to make a little difference, but it's still there.  I'll try that alt tabbing in and out next time I'm up.  It's playable, just annoying.  I feel like it does detract from my (admittedly poor) SA some too.  I am just a bit too aware of it when I look around.
