Perfect cockpit for cartoon pilots
« on: September 03, 2009, 12:05:06 PM »
I've been looking at building a simpit (since I need something else for my wife to roll her eyes and grumble about) and have been doing some looking. AMAZING stuff out there.

Examples:

Any of you guys got the UberPit in your house? More than just a "pigpen" mind you, I'm farming for ideas!

Are you going to use the pit for AH or other games, too? External gauges don't work with Aces High.

Thats pretty cool!!! For a jetjocky pit!!!

Notice the bigscreen over his knees, to give the correct visual perspective and scale to the eye!!!  Makes a HUGE difference!!!   IMO, It's the key to a good simpit.. Little tiny screens are so out of scale visually, when sitting in front of a scale seat/controls, etc. NEED that lifesize canopy frame to really make the effect, "work".

Yeah my first thought was it's seriously nice, but do all those switches work in-game?
If they are USB enabled I'm pretty sure they could be programed to work in AH, since AH handles multiple joystick configurations for the controls, but I don't think the game as programmed would send data to the gauges.
My father-in-law was an electrical engineer / director of manufacturing for a simulator company, I have been thinking about picking his brain for a nice homebuilt setup for a WW2 cockpit, maybe even some limited hydraulics tied in to the joystick inputs (looks over shoulder to see if wife is looking) though in my case it will most likely stay a pipe dream.
I agree with RC, the big screen would make a huge difference (pardon the pun) and I was thinking along the lines of setting the screen into the cockpit so the in game gauge display would be in about the right spot when looking forward, (as a compromise to AH) about like this. Even if I never get to build it, it has been a lot of fun working on the idea.
Best of luck to you in your build Reaper!

Those gauges are to monitor beverage and munchy levels...he has limited supplies so he has to RTRL every couple of sorties to "reload". I'm sure the chief mechanic has some "hangar" work that needs to be done too, or he's grounded.

Yeh, a lot of the guys that have built pits for the Falcon sims have functional guages, but mine (since I only play AH) will have none. Switchgear will be functional and USB controlled for things such as gear, flaps, trim controls, bombsite stuff etc.

The big screen and the positioning is the kicker here. I was planning on 3 monitors and a triple head, but thats over a $grand$ for screens of any decent size, where I see I can get a 42" 1080p LCD for under $700....

You mean 8 grand? 8,000 grand would be 8,000,000.

The monitor is sitting too low. With the incline of the seat you'll end up with a serious pain in your neck.
I use a 42" monitor that sits 36" of the floor, and about 3.5' away.
If you build one make it comfortable, and don't forget the cup holder.

Right now the monitor, and speakers are mounted on the wall temporarily until I can build a mount for them that is part of the pit. The IR camera is also on a temporary mount I plan on sitting it on top of the left speaker when I get that in position.

My main objective was to build something that is comfortable, easy to get into and out of, as well as relatively easy to transport. I can break it down in less that 15 minutes, and it will with the exception of the monitor fit into my 2001 Mustang.

I see what you're saying about the monitor height..... but it does look like the IP and HUD on that screen are right about where they should be with respect to the seat and driver... and the recline angle of the seat is whay you would find in an F-16 (the seat is a dimensionally correct copy of the ACES II ejection seat).

Nice set-up you got there, too...... I'm almost ready to pull the trigger on a 42" 1080p LCD myself....
