Take a guess at the fastest prop driven plane of WWII, and no peeking in the Jane's book niether. No its not the mustang and that ME262 doesn't have a prop, the fake one they put on while it was on the ground doesn't count. Post yer guesses here and we might see it modled here in some earlier variant.

I am going to guess that you are referring to `Production' aircraft, e.g., more then a few built. As such, I'm wavering between the Yak-3(9), Spitfire (we already have this..Spiteful and M.B. 5 Don't count) and Tempest. I will say the Yak.

P-47-M for an actually "produced beyond prototype" aircraft.

XP-47J like wells already said.
Quote
The XP-47J was a completely new airframe and not a conversion of an existing P-47D. The serial number was 43-46952. The XP-47J flew for the first time on November 26, 1943. On August 4, 1944, it attained a speed of 504 mph in level fight, becoming the first propeller-driven fighter to exceed 500 mph.

P47 it is and I think the book says the L model, and it was production and in service at the end of the war. Wouldn't mind seeing some of the others mentioned though.

Hello Pappy- I would have said De Havilland Hornet-It was adopted for service but it was to late to see action.  It made 485 mph its first trial flights.  It had two Merlin 130/131 2030hp engines.  Not bad for a twin.
Its first flight was on 28 July 1944.

In production and service? Then the fastest Thunderbolt was the P-47M at 470mph. But then there's the P-51H, which could do 487mph.

The F8F Tigercat(?)  Came in at the very end of the war and saw service in Korean Conflict.

Tern,

Actually F8F never fired a shot in USN markings. But it did see heavy combat in
Indo China and Veitnam with the French.
Also It was never a top end speed deamon while in service either. Production models never really exceeded the 450mph barrier due to the PW-R2800 critical altitude being around 20k to 25k. The real speed burners were the high alt and thin air supercharged engines I.E. P-47M, P-51H, TA-152 types.
Daryl Greenamyers modified Rare Bare did set a world speed record for props at 500+mph in 1969 however. There was also a limited number
of F4U-3 with a supercharged engine that could obtain 480MPH at 42K. But the need for a super high alt interceptor was not need in favor of the F4U-4.

Thanks F4UDOA

How about this fastest planes at

sea level

5000 ft - 10000 ft

10000 ft - 15000 ft

15000 ft - 20000 ft

20000 ft - 30000 ft

30000 ft - 35000 ft

35000 ft +

Criteria for entry (1) a combat engagement (2)50 produced (3) active squadron equipped with plane.

That would be pretty comprehensive

Lets see how much this board really knows
