I had an interesting fight/run the other night that demonstrates some of these speeds.
It was near A53, I believe. I was in a LA7 that had a damaged elevator from a cannon hit and I decided to try to run for it from a 190 and a SPIT. I dive for the deck and run for the nearest base. (A42 or A46...The one that is at 7500ft.) I am able to outrun the spit easily, but the 190 stays within 1K. I think to myself that, given a short period of time, I would start to get away from him. Well, I find that not only am I not getting away, but he is actually gaining on me. I start making slight banks and rolls to keep his long distance bursts from hitting me. (Not totally successfully, mind you) As we approach the friendly field, the 190 makes an error at low alt and slams the ground less than 500yds behind me. (I think he said he accidentally hit "x".) "How in the heck did he keep up???", I wonder. Looking down at the Altimeter, I see that I am on the deck at just above 7000ft msl. It was pure luck that I got away. That 190 was clearly faster than my LA7 at 7K ft. (Unless the damage was slowing me.)
Had my heart pounding the whole run home. Pings hitting an already damaged plane while trying to run makes the "pucker factor" really go up!!
