Greetings... i live in central Oregon just outside of Bend, and has anyone else noticed how hard ammo is to buy anymore?  2 box limits here, all out over there, retailers are just saying its hard to come by now, any similar problems from other people?  or could this be another way of firearm controll?

   Gun control from the back end?? Hmmm...been awhile since I bought ammo.

If something has changed it's likely one of those stealth ordinances that popped up on the state/local scene without anyone knowing it happened...otherwise the gun owners would have popped a blood vessel on it. Pretty soon, cigarettes and guns will be too expensive and illegal even in your own home. But we could still go out to the bar, get drunk, then go home and smoke a pipe or cigar without anyone saying a thing.

Welcome to 12 months ago.  Really.  If you're just now finding this out then you haven't been buying (trying to buy) ammunition for the last year.

The prices are coming down, availability is going up and all the folks who stocked up on $0.65+ .223 are already kicking themselves in the butt.

A lot depends on caliber as well.  It took 3 months to get 1000 rounds of .45ACP on my doorstep.  I picked up another 500 rounds for $199 while in Tulsa, OK a few weeks ago.  August 2008 I was able to purchase .45ACP in 10 box cases for $12.99/box.  These days 20/box is "good."

Those who reload are finding primers again and other components which seemed to vanish off the face of the earth for a few months.  What I do see in a lot of this ammunition produced during the "great ammo crisis of 2008/2009" has the quality going down as manufacturers rush to get as much as possible out the door.  Inconsistant powder charges, bullet quality and primer seating/sealing isn't what it used to be.  All things you'd expect to see with rushed production.

This entire situation was created by the election in 2008.  Not a big deal, but many rushed around and bought as much as they possibly could in the anticipation that stricter legislation would pass affecting ammo.  On a side note, since the event in 2008, more people have bought firearms that had never owned one before than in history.

Simple thing to remember now is that, this too shall pass. 

I reload (still a noob), and shoot a lot.  While I have a central supply level I do not go below a certain number.  Reloading supplies are expensive right now, but if you are patient, there are still deals to be made.

As golfer mentioned, be observant of what you do buy.  A good first look is at primer seating.  Is it uniform and set properly?  Take a look, it's a good way to prevent slamfire's and other nasty surprises.

Buy a bolt action and reload your own with a single stage press.....You'll wear your wrist out out chucking rounds before you run out of components.

 

In all seriousness when this started to become an issue I did exactly that. I would go to the range and fire 20-25 rounds, maybe play with a .22 in between. Worked my 7mm-08 Remington Model 7 down to a .5 inch group at 100 yards. Not a great group but coming from a seven pound rifle I was pretty proud of my efforts.

Guess i just really never noticed it sense i was never looking to buy ammo last year, been trying to reup my ammo supply mostly 30.06, 7.62, 300 kodiack ... Handgun ammo dosent seem to be a problem finding (lil bit pricey still)   its the high caliber ammo that seems to be in short supply, id like to reload my own and ill have to check into that

We just bought 6 boxes of rifle cartridges yesterday (2 .243, 2 .270, & 2 .300)  They didn't seem to mind it

I'm seeing the opposite. Even during the "drought" there was plenty of common rifle calibers available, .243, .270, .30-06, .30-30, 7mm, even 7.62x54r wasn't too hard/pricey. Handgun ammo, especially self-defense loads, were hard to find, and expensive when you did find it. Availability is better now, but the prices haven't gone down to pre-event in november levels.

Over here where I am at, there is a hardware store just up the road from where I work.  They have all kinds of ammo, and a ton of reloading supplies at not super expensive prices. Plus what they don't have they can order it and will sell it to you at almost their cost.

Ammo flowed into Alaska pretty well throughout the last year and a half, prices went up a little but not much.  The biggest problem was finding .45ACP but I think they had a ton of that show up and I believe it was being sold for $15 a box or something similar.  Never any limits on how much you could buy though.  Haven't checked here in Hawaii yet.

The ammo that became in such short supply was the most common ammo, like .45 acp, .223, most of the popular handgun ammo etc..  A lot of the less fired ammo stayed available.
