Thorsim, you can fly as a walkon - where you will (generally) be assigned a ride, then every time you make it back for scenario frame, you get to fly with the same people.

can i request a walk on for a type, i am new to the game and far more proficient at some aircraft than i am at say a tank or other GV.

is it possible to request a walk on slot for a specific plane or side? or is it pot luck ??

do we announce our intentions in advance or just show up ??

Pretty much pot luck to be honest - tho you can make your preference known. Mostly depends on how many show up etc, as to what spaces are available.

You can make your intentions know beforehand also, but that doesn't guarantee you a specific ride. Most walkon's just show up and get assigned a side (you can make your preference for sides known as well) and are then assigned a plane/tank/whatever.

If you register, you have more chance of getting what you want to fly, there is a box at the bottom of the registration form on ahevents.org where you can put your timing issue. If you want to fly as a walkon, just turn up and request which side you want to fly on.

Generally, if you're sure you'll make 3 out of 4 frames, do register in advance.  Some CO's are even happy with 2 our of 4, just let your Group Leader know well in advance.  Further, if you can find a personal replacement, say a squaddie, who is willing to fly that frame(s) you'll be absent, that's even better.  Numbers fluctuate a good bit each frame anyway, so it's much better (and more fun) to register and join in the pre-Scenario discussions and strategizing, which you don't get to do as a walkon.

This is true. Also it is better if we can register -too many- then the numbers will get bumped, maybe Some Tom guy can Fly Frame 1 and 3 and some Harry guy can fly 2 and 4. That fills a slot for the whole time and 2 folks get to be a part of the event.

It's important to get the word out in the arenas as there are many specialized folks who may not even be aware of these happenings. We want folks to enjoy this time.
 
Scenarios are a great part of this community and helps us all get to know folks we may shoot down at other times. Sometimes the person give you a whole other side of how they are and it's very cool.

Registering for the event also allows you to gain additional information on your dedicated role.  You'll get the chance to learn about specific tactics at group and individual levels.  You also get access to historical information provided by other players, such as stories of people, battle plans, lingo, political and cultural events of the actual battle that the scenario represents.  You'll meet new people from around the world.  Some groups spend more time in practice than they do in the actual scenario, which can be very rewarding, and this is all coordinated on the private forum available to registered players.  Your depth of immersion is endless and ultimately up to you to decide.
