P-38 and other multi-engines
« on: October 01, 2009, 01:09:02 AM »
I wish audio for multi-engine aircraft used two (or more) differently named engine sounds. So left would be recorded primarily to left channel and right the opposite and the effect of them together is even better!

Apologies if default is already like that but I dont see the custom sounds acting that way.

What happens if you throttle your right engine, independently from the left engine, down just a touch?

I thought each engine already made it's own independent sound (though traced to the same file)

They do use the same file and there is some stereo seperation in the game. I wanted to help the seperation along a little if you know what I mean.

NVM I also just found out they are not stereo sounds.

Unlike MS FSX, AH only uses mono sounds for all sounds.  FSX uses stereo sounds for your plane and all other sounds are mono.  Engine sounds in FSX also uses 4 files to generate the engine sound.  Each file is for different RPM, 1 at idle, 1 at about 33% throttle, 1 at about 66% and last one at 100% throttle.  This configuration gives FSX the real life engine sound from the backfiring at idle to the supercharger whines at higher throttles.  Acutally FSX uses other files with the engine files like prop wash, engine damage, super and turbo charger whines, etc..  Been wishing it for AH.  Talking to Pyro about a yr ago, they said they are looking into revamping or changing the sound system engine in AH.  I hope they found one and will implement it soon.

I got to thinking about this and it might be a very bad business decision for them to change to stereo sounds. The reason is all the beginning computer users that would suddenly find themselves with system trouble that they never had before. I would love to and you too obviously but I have experienced firsthand how sound can quickly humble even the most powerful system so I have to mention it.

What I have been doing is taking HD audio clips from airshows I have been to and reducing them to new audio tracks for AH but now that you mention it I have a lot of FSX audio I could use (obviously you cant share them though) with very little editing required.

You might still get the end result you were imaging if the source file for individual engines are set separately.  You could still use mono files, but your two, three (JU52 :t) or four, engines wouldn't all sound identical.

I suppose in RL you would want well tuned engines that sound identical, or it might drive a person mad over an extended period.

My plan was to maximize offset which is accomplished in AH with the software calculating 3D placement but you could do it with custom stero sounds too. I just wanted the planes to sound more like themselves and I dont mean any disrespect when I say that some airplanes sould more like lawnmowers to me (I havent seen every plane in r/l that there is in the game and they may sould like that for real). I specifically made the P-51 sounds on my system from a real P-51 recording and now I have the P-38 also. Some of these planes will be impossible to find recordings of so I probably wont ever complete it but the game already sounds wonderful with just a few changes.

Now Im out to rip sounds from THC for the tanks and big guns (it has always irritated me that a 37mm AA gun sounds like an arcade weapon).
