anti-virus/firewall software

What do you use?  I currently use McAfee because it's free with Comcast, but I'm not happy with it and would like to try something else.

ESET Smart Security 4

... Always gets the highest ratings and it's catches things that MOST other AV Software misses.....

it's better than AVG, McAffee, Norton  !

oh boy here comes the my AV is better than your AV thread AGAIN............

any of them are fine as long as its NOT McAfee or Norton......

as far as ratings go..... for every review that you find that says 1 is better than the other, you can find another review that says the opposite

none of them are 100% perfect.... by the very nature of the industry its impossible

I've always had more trouble with AV software than with viruses.

What's really wrong with Norton?  I've been using it for a couple of years now for a general use family computer. Generally upgrade each year and keep everything current. Never had any problems. The latest Norton 360 does not seem to use as much overhead either.

I switched from 32 bit XP Pro to 64 Bit Vista Ultimate.   ESET has 64 bit.

I had a nasty remote dialer,it used my machine to spam emails world wide!! it was found in Norton in the quarrantine folder in a sub folder marked "quarrantined" so Norton just ignored it!

I heard just the other day "threatfire" has a new 64bit beta coming out, presently I use avast and spybot together. This has served me well,it's free and supports 64bit. I will however be checking into threatfire asap.

Nothing. FireFox, NoScript, AdBlockPlus, and my WRT54GL w/ HyperWRT+Thibor hasn't let anything through in the few years I've used them.

Antivir (made in Germany....)
Spyware Blaster
Spybot(for the immunize feature)
Sunbelt Firewall

All through a Lynksys WRT100 my squadie sent me for free..

Was running through a Netgear WGR 614 before that..

Never have ever had anykind of intrusion or malware incident as long as
I've been using this formula..  All this software is free by the way..

With Antivirus/Security Software, seems that the more you pay for it, the less it works well and the more of a resource hog it becomes....

Corporate versions of Antivirus/Security Software are great!  But cost more than you'll ever want to spend...

Best Firewall by far and away is Comodo.   Very full featured, with a superior user interface that is easy to use, and it provides lots of helpful info.   Makes the Norton Firewall look like absolute junk in comparison.

Best of all, it is totally free, and has versions for both 32 bit and 64 bit Windows.   Dump your current Firewall, and install Comodo:

http://personalfirewall.comodo.com/

My computer runs so much faster since I removed Norton 360   Plus I got real tired of having to either pay them $60 every year to just continue to get virus definition and program updates, or $70 to upgrade to the latest version.   To heck with that.

The kicker that sealed the deal was when it failed to prevent me from getting infected, and could not even remove the infection, which was slowing down my PC something terrible.   Fortunately, Lavasoft Ad-Aware was able to remove it.

That is another good program to install, in addition to a firewall and anti-virus.   It is also free:

http://www.lavasoft.com/products/ad_aware_free.php

WinPatrol is also free, and is another very useful utility to have:

http://www.winpatrol.com/download.html

And so is Microsoft Defender, which is also free to get :

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/defender/default.mspx

You guys don't have to spend money to make your computers safe.
