Allied/Axis
« on: October 17, 2009, 12:14:51 PM »
On of our squadron members, Wreked, to be more precise has an idea I believe would benefit the planning stages of the FSO and help units coordinate planning.  The idea is to have individual Axis/Allied forms withing the FSO form.  Each will be accessible by password which is changed each new event.  It would give a central area for planning, communications, and coordination between units working with each other.  i.e. fighter squadron and bomber squadrons can talk about how they plan on accomplishing their missions and get coordinating instructions hashed out along with communication. :headscratch:

Not saying it's a bad idea, but it's been discussed before:

I understand it has been discussed before. It was 1 year ago.  But because it has been discussed once does not make it irrelevant.  I understand the structure of the FSO.  Some CIC like to make their own plans and micromanage and some like to delicate the authority.  I do believe though it would be useful with units working together in fine tuning their joint operations.  It will also give other units the ability to see how units coordinate with each other and conduct their operations.  It can be a good learning and teaching tool.  Besides I like beating my head against the wall.  It feels good when I stop.

They've mentioned they didn't want to go that route...
However, the CM's could release the objectives for each frame before the 1st frame takes place.
Having all 3 sets of objectives, the CiC for each frame would have more than a couple days notice to prepare orders.
After frame 1, the objectives for frames 2 and 3 were released because the CM had to be away for a week...
Orders could have been made up at any time before then, which could be extremely convenient.

Forums for each side would give the opportunity for a lot more work and effort to go into each frame.  Personally, I don't have the time or the desire to do that for each FSO frame, but some probably would.  For my part, fighting well as a unit and having fun is more important to me than coming up with the ultimate plan to annihilate the other side, and we seem to reach those first two goals very well with what we have now.  Do we want to see FSO turned into a more serious event?

Precursor to this post:  This post is in no way meant to demean or put down anyone.  No animosity or ill will is intended. First let me say I'm not trying to take the fun out of the FSO.  But if flying well as a unit, and having fun are the main objectives this can also be accomplished in any of the Main Arena's.  I believe part of the attraction of the FSO is that it presents the challenge of participating in Air Combat in a controlled environment that more closely represents historic events.  If not why base the FSO on historic events and plane sets.

It would give those who want to the ability to not only to coordinate easier with units they are flying with but allow other ideas and knowledge to be passed on.  I have not been into depth in the forms so I probably am restating subjects already covered.  Well guess what it happens all the time in all endeavors and as time passes new ideas lead to new business plans and new military strategy.  There does not seem to be any talk on the FSO forms about how best to conduct different operation among units.  There are bomber units that excel as well as some fighter groups. Some are excellent at conducting fighter sweeps or escort missions.  Some at NOE flying, medium and high alt bombing and dive bombing. i.e. A discussion on what is the best way to escort a bomber formation and does that change based on the type of mission they are conducting. Best method for communications between different units.  The more people that see this information the better off the community and event will be.

One thing that has impressed me after coming into the community is that the people who run AH get involved and are concerned about keeping the product fresh and supporting its community.  Not doing something because it has always been done this way attitude leads to apathy. Apathy destroys everything it touches.

Not if you don't enjoy the main arena.  :joystick:

What I am proposing is not to add to the time you have or want to put into the event.  It is up to the individuals.  If you are happy with flying as a team and having fun then enjoy.  I have times I feel the same way.  Having the forms just expands on what is available to those who participate in the FSO event and gives the axis and allies an open form to put out some good information.

Not only has it been discussed before we did it for about a year (a few years back). I am sure the old vets remember. Well those that used the forums. They were used a bit the first few months and then were pretty inactive. It is a good idea Wagger, but not real practical for reasons below.

The biggest problem Wagger is every month a CM would have to add and remove about 30 names from the two forums as many squads would be switching sides. And that only if we use the C.O.'s from each squad. Currently we have 45 squads in FSO, twice what we had a few years ago. If we added the 3 contacts from each squad that is required you looking at managing nearly 150 names each month. Many squads have 4 contacts. It would take an evening to be sure. Having said that, what if the CM made a mistake and left an Allied player or players on an Axis side? Would they be honest about it and let us know? Probably, but if by chance they saw something they should not have... It could get real ugly.
