Is it wrong if I prefer an imported MiG-15 for the price of a midrange sedan? I mean, if I could get in a pony for $35K, I would, but that kind of price for a MiG is just astounding. Then again, they were rolling off the lines like hot cakes.

Huh. I don't seem to be able to find that one importer that sold 15's/17's/21's on the cheap. Oh well.

very strict limitations on ex military aircraft (jets I believe).  Getting one is cool but you cant fly it like any other aircraft.  I heard this some where but dont know if its true.  You can only fly "X" amount of miles from its home field and there are also speed restrictions and so on...

question abut the range restrictions on some sport/military aircraft, can they fly them show to show or do they need to have them transported?

i mean i have heard of range restrictions i am just wondering how restrictive they are.

i.e. if a sport aircraft suit your load needs can you go anywhere, can you install the avionics, and communication equipment required to change the planes classification?

just curious

You can do anything to an aircraft that you want avionics wise but it becomes an experimental aircraft at that point.  That is if you put experimental avionics or avionics that are not type certified for your plane.

As far as making a cross country plane out of a sport aircraft it can be made into an IFR plane.  I think even if you change its designation to experimental it is still restricted to its home field.  Not a 100% on this one.

As far as doing the show circut I imagine special permission is needed to ferry them off the home base.  But I belive they can be flown from show to show.

There's one ex-military aeroplane that I'd buy if I had the money and space - the one I leant to fly on, de Havilland of Canada's splendid DHC-1 Chipmunk.

Happy days . . .

Yep, give me $5 mil, and I'd own a half-dozen of those beautiful birds.  The Yak-3 is pretty nice too.

There are many types of avionics that you cannot install into other aircraft.  Several avionics systems are STC'd for specific models of aircraft.  If it is not on the list, it doesn't go on.  You cannot put experimental avionics into a certified aircraft in any way, shape or form.  They must be TSO'd to do that.  You could change the designation to experimental, but it would be rediculous to do that.  To get the certified designation back would involve jumping through some serious hurdles.

Just buy a brand new Mustang. Heck, you can make it a turboprop if you want.
