Saitek X52 not working properly with AH
« on: October 22, 2009, 04:17:11 AM »
Hello, Im trying to make a comeback to Aces High after a couple of years absence. However I cannot get my Saitek X52 function properly with AH. Flight controls (X & Y-axis) simply go haywire when I try to takeoff, other functions (throttle, different buttons etc work OK) and the Joystick itself should be in decent condition, it worked well the last time I flew AH and has been resting in my closet ever since.. the Joystick works fine when I calibrate it through COntrol Panel/Game controllers, calibration for X/Y-axis seem to work just fine. Also, AH recognizes the X52 when I go to Options and Controls in game, so I dont know where the prolem lies, have tried uninstalling AH and reinstalling it. Im running Windows XP on AMD Sempron LE-1600 2,21 GHz.

Sorry for any spelling mistakes (english aint my mother tongue) and thx in advance.

 :cry

Did you assign the axis to pitch and roll in AH?

Sounds to me like AH autodetected the axis in the wrong direction (or you did setting it up, as there's a Z-Rotation (rudder) and Z-Slider (on the throttle by the thumb)) and is just misinterpreting your movements. Look in the Map Controllers section and move specific axis with the controller (only up/down, left/right, or rudder at once). Watch to see which number moves the most. Make sure they're all assigned properly.

I highly doubt it's your problem, but you could try using a wall-powered USB hub. Some people swear they're fine without them, but in my experience the X52 draws too much power to rely on the computer for it. There have been many cases where unstable current has slowly worn away X52s and X45 until they became useless. Also, if it's underpowered, it may not be relaying data quickly enough, causing shakiness in the aircraft's responses.

Make sure you are using the most up to date software with that joystick. If you are using XP, the update is not automatic. If you are using Win 7, the updates will come from Windows update.

Two of our squad mates are having the exact same issue as you and it seems to us that, it is not like the axis's are reversed like someone said...but that it is the axis's have no "middle ground".....it is either zero or full....nothing in between.

Here is a complete description from Raptor he sent me in an email the other day; any updates on your problem?  We sure could use a good fix for it now?

Hey guys...

Sorry I missed last night....but I WAS there.....

I signed on early...about 7:30 eastern and went into the training arena to see if I could find a way to make it work. Nothing. I could not take off without using auto take off...and once I was in flight, the slightest touch of the stick put me into a death spin.

I went out of the sim and went into the calibration app on my computer and the stick was perfectly calibrated...went back in the sim...calibrated each axis...and still could not fly.

Rudder seems to work as do all "rotations"....but the two axis's will not calibrate in the sim

The funny part is...when I tap the stick lightly and go into a spin, the sim gives me the message of "do not move the stick quickly"...or whatever that message is when you stick jerk....and that is when I just TAP the stick and move it less than an 8th of an inch.

For me it is not that I lose calibration in flight......it just will not calibrate the axis' at all while in the sim...and it sux.

Also... I tried this..a long shot.....I did an auto take off....hit the auto pilot...and then minimized the game. I then went to the calibration app on my computer and tested calibration and it was perfect.....and then I maximized the sim...was still in flight....touched the stick lightly forward and went into a death spin.

I agree...it is the sim...and it seems to be an issue of compatibility with my computer....maybe something running in the background.....but I pretty much end all unnecessary processes before I sign into the sim.,

Makes me wish one of the people with issues flew another flight sim to confirm that suspicion.

The X52 will run under AH with out any supporting Saitek software.

Call game controllers from the Saitek control panel select the X52 and leave it running on your desk top.

Exit/end the saitek stuff from your lower right task bar.

Now enter the game.

Every button on your X52 has a dx function that AH can now see. The only one it will not see is the mouse hat axis on the throttle.

All your analogues can now be set  within AH. Every button (even the mode switch and wheel buttons or the Display /timer buttons) can now take on a game function.

enjoy :lol

Thanks Tilt.....but I need to ask you to elaborate as I am a computer idiot.
Where do I find the Saitek control panel? Under the Saitek application in my program files, I have the saitek profiler and the profile editor.
What I tried was going into my task manager and stopping all processes that had "saitek" in the name or description....but even after doing that I went into AH and went into map controllers...and calibrated the Y axis (elevator) and in the advanced page (that opens to the left), I watched the dampen bar and it spikes when I touch the stick forward and spikes when I touch the stick back.
On the map page, I watch the numbers when I touch the stick...and the axis' go from 32000 to 64000 (not sure of the exact numbers) when I move the stick no more than an 1/8 inch...and it goes from 32000 to 0 when I barely move it the other way.
Again, when I am out of Aces High and I test the stick, it is perfectly calibrated.
What can I do?

If you're only using Aces High, uninstall the Saitek programs through Control Panel(classic view)>Add or Remove Programs. You don't need them unless you're doing fancy macros.

Then manually go to Windows Update (on an XP machine, there's a link in the top of your All Programs pullout), choose Custom, and look under Hardware, Optional. If there's an X52 driver in there, check it and update.

To find what Tilt is referring to (and honestly I don't know why he brought it up...none of that makes sense to me) go to Control Panel(classic view)>Game Controllers. A small window will pop up with the X52 listed. Press the Properties button.

Thanks 00Z662..
I am on Vista....I went to the control panel and uninstalled the saitek program.
I went to the "game controllers" Icon and it showed my stick...I hit properties and it had the "test" tab....and all was calibrated there.
I went to the windows update and I could not find anything that allowed me to do a custom update..
So I went to the device manager and went to the "sound video and game controller Icon...expanded it and it only came up with my audio devices...
So I went to the USB ports icons since it is plugged nto a usb port...and none of them say what is plugged into them...except the one for my printer..
How do I update the stick driver....is there another way to find it?

Using Vista to make your "Control Panel" easier and more user friendly do this

1) Right Click on your TaskBar and choose "Properties"
2) Now Choose "START MENU" tab
3) Make sure the START Menu radio button is checked and choose the "CUSTOMIZE" button
4) Under Control Panel choose the "Display as a menu" radio button
5) Click "OK"
6) Click "APPLY"
7) Click "OK" again

Now go to start then control panel.  You stick will be listed under Game Controllers.  Its alphabetical and everything you need is right there.

Thanks...but I have not had a problem to get to that.....but when I click on properties for my controller, it just comes up with the "test" tab...and when I go to "advanced" it only says "use this stick for older games".....but nowhere can I find where I can update the driver for the stick.

Unfortunately I've only ever used Windows Update with an XP machine. I would assume the websites are the same, but knowing Microsoft...

For an XP update, when the page finally finishes loading in Inetner Explorer, it'll give you two buttons; Express (doesn't notify you of anything and installs only certain updates) or Custom (you choose).
