There's one over my house that Lockheed uses. We get a stray sonic boom every now and then when conditions are right. Usually they are up too high to be heard on the ground.

Oh wow, where is that? Just curious  :x

I've heard a couple sonic booms over my house in AZ. Don't know if there's a corridor or just some hotshot from Luke (Once an f-15 flew over doing some 400 mph at just 1000 ft.  :O). Only heard two booms in six years of living here.

Last sonic boom(s) I heard was on 9/11 at about 4:30pm.  Two F-16s had just tanked and were busting the sound barrier to close up on AirForce 1 as it flew north of Indianapolis heading east.

I saw the Fighters, the AF1 bit was filled in by a guy I know in the Indy ATC tower.

Scared the crap out of the neighbors but it sure brought a sense of comfort to me.

I know what you mean. Going to the state fair and seeing Apaches flying patrol is a bit alarming at first but it definitely gives you a sense of security.

We live just close enough to Kennedy Space Center, that we get the double boom from the shuttle on re-entry, only when it goes to the space station. Watching cats, squirrels etc at that moment has its own particular form of entertainment value.

We used to get single booms over in Tampa when I was growing up, and the Shuttle was making Florida landings.

400 mph and 1000 ft?  Must have been taking his time then ;)  540 kts (closer to 600mph) and 500 ft is the usual low alt profile with F-15Es, and our NATO allies fly as low as 100' in training.
Everyone I know, goes away, in the end.

Where do you live Moray?  I've heard them quite a few times at my grandma's house in Melbourne.

Just south of Melbourne.  Sebastian area.

2 December 2009 - Flanker #31 made history today! After an extensive evaluation process, conducted by local FAA personnel, Flanker #31 was licensed by the FAA. It is now registered as N131SU, making it the first Su-27 Flanker ever to be licensed in the USA. First flights will follow shortly!

10 December 2009 -
FIRST FLIGHT! After much preparation and work, Flanker #31 (N131SU) became the first civilian-operated Su-27 Flanker in history. The aircraft blasted off Runway 25 at Rockford Airport (KRFD) after a takeoff roll of approximately 1100 feet, and climbed out of sight at a 30-degree angle. The pilots conducted a 40-minute long litany of systems checks, all of which were nominal, then returned for several low approaches and a graceful landing.

11 December 2009 - Flanker N131SU made two more flights, conducting a further series of comm/nav systems checks, touch-and-go landings and aerobatics. It has now logged 3.1 hours in the course of its three flights, with only very minor maintenance squawks. The pilots say it handles beautifully.

Good for them.  Happy to see it flying.

Someone already posted this but I did notice something new.

Btw, its only a cool $4,950,000....

Edit: I doubt it would have a USAF compliant fuel couple/nozzle and supersonic flights over U.S. main land is a big no no.

Strip

Actually Strip, as far as the refueling nozzle coupling, it is exactly the same. Also the ground power receptacle is the same and ground power requirements are also the same. There is a good reason for this. Just as most commercial airliners in the world use compatable refueling and ground power set ups.

I could tell you how I know this, but most here probably wouldn't believe it, and I'd probably have to kill you after anyway. <G>

cheers,

More test flights today, watched for awhile from work.  Airport is about a mile and a half away.  Seems to be mostly touch and go's, fun to watch in flight, and LOUD!  Just the way it should be  :x
