Hint, map is about 15x12 lkm
Kandalaksha, Russia, in the Murmansk province at the NW tip of the White Sea.

67°13′N 32°20′E / 67.217°N 32.333°E according to Wiki.

If I followed it correctly, the rail line was important because it came from the port of Murmansk, where a lot of western aid arrived.

OK, not sure why it won't make it bigger than a thumbnail.  Try clicking on it to see a bigger view (hosted at Mediafire.com).

I spent like 2 hours scanning every inch of the Baltic coastline and large Russian lakes and rivers....  :furious :)

LOL. When I saw that last one, I thought
"Boy, that's so ugly it's gotta be michigan."
So I zoomed in on Detroit, and it looked just as ugly & muddy as that picture... wasn't the right spot, but I got a big kick out of it anyhow. *smile*

I found several cities/ rivers that look like that across the world (particularly in India and China), haven't found that one yet, though. Perhaps we could get a continent?

It is not on the Mississippi, neither in India or China.  Wrong hemisphere for all three.

Is that hint enough for now?

Yes sir.  I spent a year there on youth exchange, so it seemed a good choice.
