HP or Dell laptop?
« on: November 22, 2009, 02:26:59 PM »
I've asked this before but i narrowed it down to 2 laptops now, the Dell Studio 16XPS - http://www.dell.com/us/en/home/notebooks/laptop-studio-xps-16/pd.aspx?refid=laptop-studio-xps-16&s=dhs&cs=19 its the one on the far left.

or the HP DV6 Quad Edition laptop- http://www.shopping.hp.com/webapp/shopping/computer_can_series.do?storeName=computer_store&category=notebooks&a1=Category&v1=High+performance&series_name=dv6tqe_series&jumpid=in_R329_prodexp/hhoslp/psg/notebooks/High_performance/dv6tqe_series

The HP seems to be way more powerful compared to the Dell but i have heard people say that it has a very short battery life and that it gets very hot after a few minutes, and that u pretty much have to have it pluged in (which the AC adapter is the size of a xbox power adapter) while gaming otherwise it'll die? I dont know too much about laptops so i hope i can get some advice.

My personal experience is short batt life with HP. Dell seems to be a bit better there.

It's all about personal preference really. My dad and I personally like Dell's, but others might want HP. Also, both laptops are customizable...which features were you deciding to get? Or were you getting the bare bones?

On the Dell i would only upgrade the 3GB memory to 4GB and the Hardrives 250GB - 320GB. the HP i would leave standard

Basicly i am looking for a laptop that will last me a while and be my main computer since i am going into the military, and i really wanna get back into Aces High and America's Army

I have one of these which will run any game out there really well ATM. think its been replaced with the p7808 though. Same animal, a bit better cpu and windows 7. DDR3 memory all around makes a big difference in a laptop imho.

we use Apple and HP laptops at work and they seem to be pretty durable, unlike any of the other brands we've used over the years. havent had any dells long term to compare though.

i have a HP dv something series, for 3-4 years, but after 2 years my monitor was broken, was replaced in extended warranty, now is cracked again, same way along the joint section all around. i'll dump it and get something stronger built, my op pinion  HP are nice as design, but too ..much cheap plastic, not fit for mobile use.

Lenovo's are expensive but inherited their design from IBM thinkpads, which are a reference.

I bought my Daughter the DV6. It comes with the largest battery available. You can get quite a bit of time out of it if set to conserve. If you run it full up you get about 1 hour from the 12 cell battery. My daughters is set to be full up when plugged in and to conserve when on battery. I prefer HP over Dell any day.

In any case... the more powerful the machine the more power it requires.

Only other machine I even considered was a Toshiba. They make good lappys too.

A Toshiba, comparatively equiped, will give you more service and less problems than either HP or Dell. We are still using a Toshiba we bought in 2004 before we started RVing full time.

The folks I know using the HPs seem to like them very well. Some have had them for years.
