What is a good PC Video Game?
« on: November 22, 2009, 11:18:30 PM »
I enjoyed Diablo I and II and also like Wolfenstein. So with that in mind what would any of you suggest.

I don't like online games other than AH.

May just be my wide variety of games, but I like the games you mentioned, and many more, but my personal favorite right now is:

Bioshock - FPS, Placed in 1950's, Guns (Pistol/Tommy gun/Chemical thrower, etc.) and Genetic Mutations (Telekinesis, fire flames/Lightning/Ice with hands, etc.), very good story line with player chosen story, to an extent of course.  Very explorable world, yes there is a set path, but you don't have to follow it until you darn well feel like it.

I just beat it today (lost my old save of 70% to a reformat and finally re-installed), and I plan to go back through it to find things I missed and try different story paths. :)

You might like Crysis, replace pendant with nanosuit and Nazis with Koreans and it's sort of the same thing as Wolfenstein. Oh and instead of trying to exploit some crazy mystic world it's alien technology.

Not really no, Fallout 3 rocks in that regard. Almost all other shooting games seem to keep you corralled into a zone or lane.  Another thing I love about it is the mods. Everything from turning drab brown into summer or fall to a specific weapon or armor. It is very easy to mod, and fallout nexus has thousands. Enough so that you never really need to get bored with it.

The Total War series is good if your into strategy games.

Bioshock was fun once, but all the action was on this giant spaceship.
Lots of puzzle solving, etc.

I ran through Crysis once, and promptly deleted it off my HD. Not worth the money IMO.

If your looking for a new game, go back to fallout.
Try either "summer" or "Autumn". Either will totally change your fallout experience.
No more barren wasteland, just lots of bad guys hiding in the trees.
Add "Enclave Enabled" to give you more bad guys to shoot at. (Brings the Enclave guys in right away)
From there it would depend on what kind of character you like to play.
Although I highly recommend

HeroinZeroWeaponMod (Loads of new weapons carried by enemys and at merchants)
MoreMapMarkers
Alternate Start Role players. Pretty much title says it all. Instead of the vault, start Fallout as any one of several possible models, refuge, mechanic, Regulator,  its a long long list. Some of them are very tough to start with.

For new places, Shady Sands and Rockville add several quests, new merchants, etc.
VDSP for some new interesting perks.
Megaton Scavengers gives you 3 more people to sell stuff to. And their $$$ resets faster than most merchants.

Of the DLC, I like Zeta the best, Point Lookout is pretty good, The Pitt and Anchorage are fair.
Anchorage is a lot more linearly scripted like most shooters.
The Pitt is gritty, tough choices, esp for a good or neutral character.

Try Mount and Blade. It is a first person perspective game in which you can fight 'medieval' style battles on foot or mounted while leading armies of various sorts of soldiers. There is a thriving mod community as well with mods ranging from cavemen battles to book adaptations and even some sci-fi mods as well.

Agree, Mount and Blade is a blast!

It too has a big world, that lets you go where you choose.

Getback,
I loved those games too.  These filled the void nicely.

"Commandos 2" and "Hidden and Dangerous 2" are both a little older but were very well put together games.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Commandos_2:_Men_of_Courage
Commandos 2 is a 3rd person squad based real time espionage game that puts you in control of several characters that must sneak around WW2 Europe using their varying attributes to complete their missions.  Not all characters are used on all the missions but you can switch between the ones that are available.  The piece de resistance is CO-OP play were both players can control any number of the available characters to complete the mission.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hidden_&_Dangerous_2
Hidden and Dangerous 2 is a squad based 1st person tactical shooter.  You are in control of up to 4 characters sneaking through WW2 Europe.  You choose your characters from a pool of about 24 that have different abilities and strengths.  The load-outs for the characters are completely customizable and depend on their physical strength and what uniforms and backpacks you use. (i.e. your sniper can also carry a machine gun besides his rifle or as many hand guns that fit in his pockets or extra ammo for the other characters.)  You can switch between first person view and control of all the characters in your squad and also command their movements in first person view or on a pop-up map.  You also control their aggressiveness.  This is great for setting up ambushes and cover fire.  Items can be gathered off of dead NPC's.  Sneak is the operative word, you have a sound level meter to help stay quiet.( some characters are not good at staying quiet.)   Oh, and the expansion pack "Sabre Squadron" adds CO-OP mode.

If you liked Baldur's Gate and the Neverwinter Nights series (or pretty much any of the Forgotten Realms games) check out Dragon Age: Origins.
Ron White says you can't fix stupid. I beg to differ. Stupid will usually sort itself out, it's just a matter of making sure you're not close enough to become collateral damage.
