Ok got something funky happening with my sound card
« on: December 11, 2009, 11:08:25 AM »
I have had Win7 Ultimate 64bit running flawlessly on my RC version new system until today. It runs flawlessly on my other system with onboard sound. So today I decided to start over from scratch and install my second copy of Win7 Ultimate 64bit that I bought a while back. Goes through operating installation and all is great until it decides to not locate my sound card...no change in any hardware from the RC version at all. So I go and download the driver from Creative's site and start the installation...about 2 minutes into it I get a BSOD that just came outta left field.

The only difference that I can think of is when I was running the RC version I used the drivers off the CD that came with the sound card but for this one I thought I should download the current non-beta drivers just to be safe. Thinking I may go back and use the drivers that came with the card instead of the new ones off the site. If anyone else has an idea let me know.

System is
i7-920 2.66GHz LGA 1366 130W
6GB RAM
1TB Seagate w/ 32MB cache
Win7 Ultimate 64 bit
Sound Blaster XtremeGamer (not working atm)
Samsung DVD Burner
Nvidia GTX 260 Core 216 Superclocked Edition 896MB

Remove said sound card, and remove all but one memory stick then install the OS, shut down remove power cables etc.  Reinstall the sound card and memory and reboot.  Its a known issue I read yesterday but forgot which forum.

would be grateful if you can dig the link up TD.

I have a similar issue with win7 64bit.  No BSOD's though.  2 hard lockups with audigy enabled and one where i was able to close AH with onboard.  I still need to log more play time to see if I have resolved the problem.  Hasn't done it for a week so i'm fingers crossed it won't happen again.

Well I tried it one other way and started looking at the file. I had a corrupted download from Creative because the second time it downloaded it showed up with the correctly listed file size. The other one was junk.

I did pull the sound card just to be safe but did not pull any RAM and went through the whole reinstallation process with the sound card. It is working fine now.

If you get lockups try different versions of the driver. I had a persistent problem with my sons computer where Win7 would randomly just bluescreen or corrupt screen.

I tried several things, including change bios settings voltages etc. Finally I dumped Win7 RC and installed XP. The moment I tried to install the same version of driver I used in W7, XP bluescreened. Turns out the new versions of ATI drivers were totally uncompatible with my sons 4830 card. Installed older version and it's rock solid like it used to be.

i got the same issue with a soundblaster xfi extreme sc.  about everyother day game crashes.  it usually happens when somebody talks on vox  there's a high pitch scratchy sound then boom, game freezes for about 2 seconds then will crash.   I am also running win7 64bit, havent figure out how to solve this yet.

It's the drivers. Win7x64 is still new and the manufacturers still haven't learned how to do proper drivers using the new driver model introduced with vista. Typically the new driver model that was supposed to end bluescreens by making drivers user mode, now causes 90% of OS crashes. I remember how Vista fanbois were screaming on UBB's how good thing the new driver model was and how it's going to end all bluescreens  :lol

I haven't had a chance to check it out more than just a few minutes here and there but I think this Creative card is gonna take a flight to someone else in the not to distant future. I really like what I have read about the Auzentech cards and have heard some good information about the new Razer sound card but I don't like the money side.

Something has to be screwed up somewhere in your setup or installation...maybe even how many different processes your SB Xfi soundcard is running that is absolutely unnecessary and might be the issue all together.........

my setup: ( incase it makes a difference ? )
Antec 900 series Case with (2) 200mm fans & (3) 120 mm fans
ASUS M3A32-MVP Deluxe MB w/ WiFi ( WiFi is disabled, I seldom use it )
AMD 64 Athlon 6400+ X2 3.2 ghz dual core
(4) 1 gig Corsair XMS2 PC6400 dual Channel simms
ASUS EAH3870 TOP/G/HTDI/ 512meg DDR4 PCI-E videocard
SB X-Fi XtremeGamer Fatal1ty Professional Series ( the current equivalent model = X-Fi Elite Pro )
PC Power & Cooling 750watt Silencer/Crossfire edition PSU
ASUS DVDRW Dual Layer burner with Lightscribe
ASUS DVD-ROM
7 in 1 multi card reader with 3.5 Floppy drive
(2) Hitachi 320 gig SATA II hard drives
(1) Hitachi 160 gig SATA II hard drive
(1) Hitachi 120 gig SATA I hard drive

1 of my 320 gig HD's is set up as Dual Boot:
1st partition = windows XP Pro SP3 32 bit
2nd partition = Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit

I have had no issues at all with either OS: XP or Windows 7.......... and Aces High has worked extremely better under the Windows 7 OS for me than it does in Windows XP.......

I would say the only small adjustment I had to work with was getting Windows 7 sound to the same adjustments I had in windows XP for aces high........

as MrRipley has pointed out in an older thread regarding windows 7......... Vista and Windows 7 do not utilize  DirectX the same way windows XP does.... regarding sound..........

I run both my OS's ( partitions ) with very close watch on keeping processes to a minimal......... and keeping both OS's from becoming a CLUTTERED MESS..........

I know everyone's PC is put together differently.......... and people install hardware, programs, etc.. differently and set them up differently.......

but just saying....... I have used the newest drivers for my Hardware on each OS....... whether it is 32 bit for XP  or 64 bit drivers for Windows 7.......

and I have not had any of these issues of Aces high crashing on me because of my sound card.......

maybe this weblink can help some of you:
http://forums.creative.com/t5/Sound-Blaster/XFI-processes-what-does-what/m-p/167825

hope this helps.... Good Luck  ( My aplogies for such a long winded reply )

Thanks for the information TC. I can't figure this one out since it was working fine before I went and installed the released version of Win7 64bit Ultimate instead of teh RC version.

I got your PM and when I get to that point I will let you know.
