How can a dog detect an earthquake?

The eminent P-wave?
The electromagnetic waves that precede an earthquake?
Super hearing or keen sense of smell?

Hearing, I can hear them coming too. I'm usually awake before they hit or during the daytime I'll sometimes hear them.

I think the dog probably just felt the first bit of the quake, it's not so much of a shake at first so not so obvious.

According to Japanese research seismologists in Japan that are studying whether cats or dogs can detect earthquakes prior to them happening says it's electromagnetic waves that they can detect.  However, dogs and cats have only shown they can detect earthquakes of 6.0 or greater up to 3 hours before the event.  American seismologists though aren't quite convinced.

Hours? yeah right :)

That dog probably heard what I hear, which is a very low frequency thump with about the same lead time as the dog took off to the quake hitting. I think it depends on the depth of the quake too. My missus and friends can't hear it, but I often hear low freq stuff they can't (that bugs the hell out of me trying to get to sleep).

The dog thought it was being interfered with when the floors initial low frequency vibration tickled its nuts.

If you look at the second angle you can see the glass wiggle a few seconds before the quake hits.  I'm sure it was just a small tremor before the big one and not some sort of extra canine sense.

When a dog falls into a big crack in the ground, that's a good clue.   :headscratch:

Nah I know others that are the same. We get a lot of quakes here so we have a good chance of figuring it out.

Cats can detect them too. Back in 1991, the wife and I had a kitten about 5 months old that woke up out of a dead sleep and starting jumping around the living room like someone had tied an electric cord to its tail. 30 second later....BOOOM! I thought someone had backed a truck into the house. Then the tinsel on the Xmas tree was shaking for about a minute after. Earthquake. Poor kiity was pretty shook up!
