SBD rockets
« on: January 13, 2010, 10:22:49 AM »
Looking for info on SBD ordinance, I found this:

http://www.history.navy.mil/branches/hist-ac/sbd-5.pdf

About 4 pages in, there is a mention of .50 cal gunpods (like P-39) that were developed but typically supplanted by rocket racks.  The SBD would be much more useful if it could carry these.  Also mentioned is the wing mounts could carry up to 325 .lb bombs, where in-game version has ineffective 100 .lb-ers.  Searching threads, I learned that the 1,000 .lb/(2) 100 .lb set up we have was max recommended loadout for carrier launches.  Intuition tells me that  8 rockets/(2) 1,000 .lbs was over the max recommended loadout for the F4U-1D carrier launches, yet we have those.  Quid pro quo, I say.  Anyone else want rockets and/or 250 .lb wing bombs for the SBD?

+1 but you might want to look up the version history to find out more on which models the modifications were performed on and which squadrons had them.

I'm looking, but so far just another vague mention of rockets being used.  I did get a picture of it though:

It was a very small pic, so I had to enlarge and save in paint.
Forgive all the extraneous details as I have not the skill to show the picture without them.

If HTC can roll up multiple variants of the I-16 into one joint, then I would hope that the SBD (and other aircraft with minuscule differences between models) could have its horizon expanded.  Right now, it is a "huh, a what" aircraft is all three arenas.

I think it'd be used more for ground attack in the earlier arenas.

Don't take this as a no but, land-based SBD's only fired a total of 232 rockets during the war. Carrier-based SBD's never fired any rockets at all, so it was very rare. About the time that rocket usage became prevalent the SBD's were being replaced with SB2C's and they used a lot of rockets, 5,542 to be exact.

Heck, PBJ's (B-25C's/B-25H's/B-25J's) fired 2,951 but that's another wish!

So it was very rare, but it was used and would be fun.
