Need some help OCing RAM.
« on: January 14, 2010, 05:00:59 PM »
Well, I just got my PC working again, this time with OCZ Platinum DDR2 1066 RAM. The only problem is, it's running at only 400Mhz, I tried to overclock and set the voltage to what was recommended once, but it corrupted my windows installations and I had to format and do all that good stuff. Is there anyone that would mind taking the time to help me get this RAM running the way it should be? My specs are as follows:

CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 940BE

Motherboard: Gigabyte MA790GP-DS4H

RAM: 4GB(2X2GB) OCZ Platinum DDR2 1066

GPU: PNY 8800GTS 640MB

anything else: ask

By it's very nature, OC'ing is an organic, device specific process.  Even if I had the exact same components, settings that were 100% stable for me might well leave you reinstalling a corrupt Windows installation again.  So the truth is that knowing what others are doing with the same RAM is of only marginal use to you anyway.

The best way to prevent the corrupt Windows installation is a two step process.  First, while doing the original "gross run up" on settings, disconnect the internal harddrive and determine gross stability by using MemTest, and when you think you have reached the maximum settings boot a Linux Live CD and run that for a bit before switching back to your internal hard disk with Windows.

And before you do switch to Windows, prepare a 2nd hard drive with a drive copy tool (Clonezilla is free) and work from the cloned drive, so if you do trash your Windows installation, it's easy to "restart".

according to the Gigabyte MA790GP-DS4H website product page & supported memory pdf file.......... only  OCZ 1 Gig Dimms are supported

http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/FileList/MemorySupport/motherboard_memory_ga-ma790gp-ds4h.pdf

not sure if that could be a problem or not......... sometimes it matters , other times it does not affect it.....

make sure you have both your  2 Gig DDR2  Dimms installed in the same colored Dimm slots  .if you only have 2 sticks, is better to use DDR_1 & DDR_2 ( The yellow slots closest to the CPU )

Channel0 DDR2 _1 (yellow slot)
Channel1 DDR2 _2 (yellow slot)

Channel0 DDR2 _3 (orange slot)
Channel1 DDR2 _4 (orange slot)

should automatically recognize and set itself to dual channel mode and auto set the clock speed etc.......

unplug the Power cord... go reset / clear the CMOS. then when you boot back up, go into BIOS and select "Load Optimized Defaults"

and all should work / boot up like you want it....... ( btw this MB has a dual Bios built into it...... )

hope this helps... good luck

Two things.   Like TC mentioned you're using incompatible Memory for the MB (possibly not a big deal, however your MB might be having issues with it).   If you're using 32-bit XP or Vista, that G80 VC is undercutting your System Memory on top of it all.

Would I still be able to get 1066 speed then? I put them in DIFFERENT channels because it said "due to CPU limitations, DDR2 1066 is only supported by one DIMM per channel"

I am not sure if you will obtain your desired 1066 speed.. but if you install each 2 gig stick in the same colored slots as I mentioned in my post  DDR_1 & DDR_2 ( yellow slots ) then that would be one DIMM per channel

DDR_1 = Channel 0

and

DDR_2 = Channel 1

if you did not have it installed this way when you initially put it all in/built it etc.., and actually had a stick installed in a yellow slot and the 2nd stick installed in an orange slot...then that is probably why it is clocking at 400mhz and is why it is not operating in Dual Channel mode.....

edit: start over and follow the instructions I posted in my 1st post above.......

NOTE: be sure to ground yourself and don't be working on it while only wearing socks and on carpet........  clear the CMOS ( reset it ) then go by the instructions.and it will all prob boot right up and recognize it automatically at the correct speed you looking for 1066.........
