Just a thought
« on: January 16, 2010, 09:16:27 PM »
I was messing around off line taking off from a V base and the though came to me about using a recon plane from V bases on line. Something like a L-2 Grasshopper might be good for this.  You could have it so that ONLY that type of aircraft could take off from a V base and use it to scout for tanks or the such.  I think a plane like this could work in this manner because it really did not need an real airstrip and carried no armament.
Anyway, this just came to my mind and thought I would share it.

Oh, the idea sound snice at first, but I'm against it for gameplay reasons. Attacking a base with GV's is difficult enough as is: Unless all hangars are down, the defenders have all advantages.
They can not only tower out & reup at will (while the attacker has to spend several minutes to get back into the fight). But hey can already sit there with engines shut down listening for the attackers to come in (with headphones you can locate enemy tanks quite precisely), and they have god view from manned ack & tower as well.

Thats why I'm also against the routinely recurring wish for plane rearm pads on airbases, btw.

I'm half and half. I really do like the idea if I'm defending the Vbase, but I don't like it if I'm attacking. I like vanilla, but I like chocolate as well. Maybe have a (very) small hanger next to the VH that, if destroyed, disables the aircraft?

What Lusche said makes sense.  Defending a V base is usually easier than attacking one and I guess if you really wanted to scout from a V base you could up a jeep and that would make things be on a more even playing field than having a plane take off from there.  Maybe we could have motorcycle with a sidecar and the passenger able to shoot a 30 cal. from it?  That might be kinda neat and different

What if the said aircraft could take off from certain points, like the tank spawns? That way the attacking team could use them as well, to (for instance) scout the V-base, see if the ack is down, see if anyone is coming out of the hangars and what they are in, where they're headed, etc. etc. That sounds like a fair compromise for Lusche's point.

I agree with joe, and also why make a new hanger? just have it come out of the VH

I said a new hanger or something like a big tent for the aircraft, that way you would only have to knock out one object instead of three to remove that particular asset to the base. Although thinking about it, this might make it that much harder for the offensive side.

I can understand both sides of the argument. V bases are a pain in the arse to attack, BUT Joe here brings up another point. Recon is something that is sorely lacking in the MA. I like the idea of being able to up a plane and help out the ground pounders, god knows I can't do that from the ground, I can't hit the broadside of a barn with a Panzer (I know, I've tried. The damned thing moved on me). So before anyone gives this the "no go" (I know, too late) let's look at this.

1: We're talking about a lightly armored, unarmed aircraft. Something that probably resembles the Cessna's great-grandfather. So, yes, defenders have an advantage in being able to spot enemies, the attackers do not have to worry about an air assault from this particular aircraft. The spotters only real weapon would, in essence, be the ability to annoy a Tiger to death.

2: Scoring. Nobodies going to up the plane if there's nothing in it for them, unless of course they're me. (I care more for taking bases and winning the map more then perks. What am I going to do with a 262? I'll probably crash the damn thing anyways) So I propose this: smoke rockets. And before anyone brings up the "that's not how they did it" understand that this is a game. We rely heavily on VOX to communicate information (some squeak more then others) but there are those out there who do not use a headset/mic, (Granted few, but they are out there) and those sneaking in a few more minutes of late night gaming before wife ack/SAM/nuke grounds them. Instead of trying to fly one handed and type while avoiding Whirbies, it would be most effective to line up and "pop smoke" on a target. I would suggest a load out of 10 rockets with a different color smoke (red for example). If the pilot manages to place a rocket within 25 meters of a target he scores. If he gets all 10 off, that can be comparable to a successful bomber run. Attackers can avoid this by, well, moving. Let's face it, you're going to have to anyways, because the base aint gonna come to you. Secondly, use Whirbies, nuff said.

3: They will be a need for some checks and balances. I propose removing the bright red neon sign that follows GV's visible from the air. This will force the Recon pilot to get down and dirty, at the same time make him more viable. It's too easy to spot GV's from the air. That and it makes any camo scheme on the vehicle more effective.

4: It's already being done. I will up a plane and circle a GV battle while calling out targets. Many times I will dive into a target shooting 50 cals to mark the spot. In essence, whats being asked is not the implementation of a new tactic, just the formalization of a current one. The argument that this will provide an unfair advantage to the defenders is nullified just for the simple fact that you're already having to deal with it. As a matter of fact this same tactic is employed in attacking a base at the same time as defending one. As for Lusche's objection to a rearming pad for planes, I agree, it's V-base, not an airfield.

I'm sorry if this reads a little fuzzy, but it's 6 am and I've been up all night (medical problem). I do not intend to be rude or crass towards anyone. But hopefully, you'll take my points into consideration.

with thousands of bases spread across the many different maps we have......... I have found maybe 10 bases where either the spawn is around the corner or its extremely far away from the base........ on the rest of the bases I can see a GV the instant it spawns and watch him the entire time until he reaches the base......

a person in the tower or man gun can give the exact same information a spotter plane can....... in fact even better information as hes not busy trying to fly as well

in short........ IMO......... not needed in any form

I say remove the god's eye feature, (unless you launch/teather a dirigible and man that with field glasses), and replace it with a feisler-storch, Cessna-type scout craft. Great idea :aok Make that little craft harder to see by high performance fighters, it should have no icon visible but to gvs. Have the marker smoke be able to stick to the tank if you have good aim..LOL

Yes I agree with others, a global change, remove the neon icons from GVs except the scout crafts perhaps, this will make them valuable even to bomb****s who will not cease their interuption of exclusive tank battles. Sure bomb gvs when they charge an airfield base, but when they are minding their own business having a great ground battle? Should be a law! :salute
