F4U with half of a left wing outruns a La-5FN!
« on: December 21, 2000, 01:06:00 AM »
I flew a sortie yesterday morning in the MA, flying a La-5FN.  Merged with a F4U, then dove after it when the F4U continued on into an attack on a low friendly.  The friendly and F4U made a pass, then the F4U bugged out.  Now it was the friendly and myself chasing the F4U.  Since I was coming down with a lot of E I passed the friendly, and for a time closed to within 1.0 of the F4U.  At this point I noticed two things that amazingly occurred back to back.  First, I realized that the F4U had only half a left wing, then the amazing part happened:  the F4U maintained alt and pulled away.  A La-5FN on the deck, coming from a deep dive with WEP on is no slouch, but this crippled F4U managed to outrun me.  At 1.8 I gave up, and rtb'ed.

This happened once before in a fight I had with a F4U where I got a burst on him after some maneuvering, taking off half a wing.  At this point, the F4U proceeded to fly a wide circuit away from me, maintaining both altitude, and speed.  I followed in disbelief.  I'd get close, then he would dip down a bit and pull away, then convert to alt again.  This went one for awhile, and I was getting very low on fuel.  Finally, the F4U made a mistake, went into a steep dive, but before he could pull away I took the rest of that wing off.  As the one-winged F4U flipped to its death I thought, "At least it can't do that on one wing."

Lenny it's a graphics glitch, what you really see is a F4 with just the wing tip lost. When the dust settles and after V1.05 is released I'm sure they will create the proper graphics to show real degrees of damage.

I think you misunderstood Leonid ,here are the real fact (no what you have seen on your distorded FE  )

The F14 has folded her wing to extend breaking the sound barrier   be glad he didn't use his Sidewinder in return
In no way her wing were damaged

More seriously I've been outruned several times (in Typhoon or Yak) by damaged planes perhaps it's due to my poor connection (400 ms on average) dunno

That is still quite good achievement

I'd bet that yaw of the aircraft without wingtip would slow it down alot..  (hmm, so this why people hates hogs, HTC forgot to model yaw drag for them)

I don't know, but when the hog gets down to <25% fuel it can pretty happily maneuver with the wingtip gone (sustained turns etc). Seems a bit unlikely, but then I don't know HTC's position on what a wingtip missing represents.

My challenge still stands.  Email me a good time to meet in the TA.  I will fly an A/C behind your Corsair, and surgically attempt to remove only the wingtip, then I will disengage, and let you attempt to manuveur into position to get a shot on me.  Takers?

Now when duma did remind me of fuel...  I remembered that theres no difference in fuel usage with fuel leaks
I've flown like 35 miles with wingtip gone and a half tank of gas with a leak and still could had flown for 20 miles more to next airfield.
Something like that it did go.. fuel leak didn't seem to effect much.

Oh, I wasn't suggesting that you could dogfight with it and shoot people down in a 1v1. Just saying that it seems somewhat unlikely that half a wing gone graphically means half a wing gone flight-model wise.

Rgr, Duma, way back in beta, I think I remember someone at HTC saying that the graphic representation *should be* about 12-24 inches of the wingtip missing, not half the wing...dunno, guess that's the least of their concerns at the moment.

I think there used to be a bug with planes flying with out wings for example, but on the other FE ( flying the damaged plane ) they had all stuff intact.

Maybe the bug was fixed, maybe it has resurfaced? Guess it's out of the question if you confirmed from the other guy wether he had damaged wing.

Heya Leonid    I was the friendly you spoke about and I took off his wingtip on a dive chase. After the loss he pulled away from me. Ok, I was in a 109F4, slow bugger you know - but I was really amazed that he pulled away even from you overtaking me at a reasonable speed.

Turned on recorder just after he started pulling away with 1.5 wings (knew the "Highspeed clipped wing F4U story". And trust me I was at least co-E with the F4U when he lost his wingtip!

But cannot post without Leonids perimission (   )...

BTW, has anyone seen or red about a/c loosing wingtips or half wings during real dogfights?

I've seen aileron lost, huge holes, extensive damage ... but never a clean cut like the ones we actually see in AH.
