I flew a sortie yesterday morning in the MA, flying a La-5FN. Merged with a F4U, then dove after it when the F4U continued on into an attack on a low friendly. The friendly and F4U made a pass, then the F4U bugged out. Now it was the friendly and myself chasing the F4U. Since I was coming down with a lot of E I passed the friendly, and for a time closed to within 1.0 of the F4U. At this point I noticed two things that amazingly occurred back to back. First, I realized that the F4U had only half a left wing, then the amazing part happened: the F4U maintained alt and
pulled away. A La-5FN on the deck, coming from a deep dive with WEP on is no slouch, but this crippled F4U managed to outrun me. At 1.8 I gave up, and rtb'ed.
This happened once before in a fight I had with a F4U where I got a burst on him after some maneuvering, taking off half a wing. At this point, the F4U proceeded to fly a wide circuit away from me, maintaining both altitude, and speed. I followed in disbelief. I'd get close, then he would dip down a bit and pull away, then convert to alt again. This went one for awhile, and I was getting very low on fuel. Finally, the F4U made a mistake, went into a steep dive, but before he could pull away I took the rest of that wing off. As the one-winged F4U flipped to its death I thought, "At least it can't do that on one wing."
