Jmccaul,

I have both books. Duels in the sky was written by Capt.Eric Brown of the Royal Navy.
He offers a very opinionated view of the top A/C of WW2 not limited to only ship board fighters. I have a hard time with his book however because of some of his comments about one of my favorite A/C(care to guess). Anyway some of his references to performance seem to be off the mark, and his preferances based on ideals that seemed to have a very British slant. Joint fighter conferance is just that.
Meeting minutes, flight cards and performance reports conducted in Jan. 1944.
It is not so much a book as an overview of activities and discussions on the present and future of A/C design. I use it constantly as a reference and it is quoted repeatedly in other publications. All in all if your looking for a good read get Duels in the Sky.
If your looking for reference data and a 1944 point of view from the pilots and designers of these A/C get Joint Fighter Conferance.

Joint Fighter Conference.

"Duels in the Sky" is fun, but it's just one man's opinion.  And there are some stupid planes in there (Fairey Fulmar, WTF?).

There are some outright factual errors, and he is vague about which sub-types he actually flew.

A better book by Brown is "Wings of the Luftwaffe".
