pop the chute at a low altitude, then they can't get you! then you can run around and create hate and discontent with impunity!  :D

For this one instance, it wasn't necessary, we got jumped right after our flight group spotted the ships under our position...Saltee was out of ack range from the ships and us fighters were trying to protect the bombers as they made their run. I can see the argument if we were at low enough alt to make a difference but that wasn't the case here.

Actually, (DadDog can correct me if needed) this is frowned upon in FSO.  I believe there was a whole thread about pilots running around blasting stuff with their .45 as the ack is usually turned down for FSO.

Once your plane is not fly-able/land-able you are "down" and should tower with extreme speed.

I think captain was joking, but VonMessa is correct. Once you're down you need to exit your chute. A while back we had some downed pilots get on an enemy runway, (the field was deacked) and shoot at planes landing/rearming. Not allowed in FSO.

1) Firing on planes on the ground not allowed
2) Firing at objects on the ground (like the AA of a field) not allowed
3) Firing on vehicles on the ground not allowed.

NOTE: Any of the above points would only be allowed if an admin CM specifically put in their special orders that was allowed. Otherwise as Daddog and others have said when your feet touch the ground you should exit.

I was still dangling when the episode that started this thread happened.  No worries here.  I understand the whys.  Once my chute opens, I'm outta #&+<*^% Dodge with .ef Enter.  That's providing I have the alt to begin with.    :uhoh

We get chutes???

Too many knuckle whitening attempts at landing half a plane to bail or .ef, too much fun trying to land a flying rock  :x  Ride till I Die!

Wait, I have a question.  Why bail?  My understanding of the scoring in FSO is that only a landing counts as "Life."  In other words, a ditch or a bail count as death in the final score.  Like Roc, I have always just rode it down....

Good point (no pun intended).  I was under the impression that landed = plus something, bailed/ditched/captured = 0 and dead = minus something.  Or am I thinking about the scoring system of that "other" game?

Depends on the Admin CM and your squad.

Some Admin CM's count deaths and bails and count a death as more for the enemy.  This has been done in the past and will probably happen again.

Some squads track their scores and might track a death different than a bail. For example here is our 2009 FSO squad stats.

We have been tracking them since 2006 if I recall.

he was out of icon range and since ack was firing was the only reason i noticed a dot which ended up being a chute. Gave my reason and won't be changing, .ef or prepare to explode if your near my target/ack.

Gyrene,

I passed over Saltee about 2K, myself and another guy were engaged with a couple of Ki-84s and a Zeke. As I passed over Saltee and spotted him I ordered anyone that had a shot at that chute to knock it out. It wasn't done out of spite or to be underhanded. Last year we had similar episode where mutltiple guys hung in chutes over a TF we were CAPing and it allowed other aircraft to make runs on the TF without worrying about ack. We decided that night it wouldn't happen again. As I explained earlier in the thread, it's not just the ack affected. A guy in the chute can give six calls report the number and alt of our aircraft as well as report TF position and heading. Also like I said earlier it's nothing personal. Also it's not our fault Saltee didn't know about the .ef command. Personally I'd be happy if we never had to do it again because it's a waste of ammo. However we will keep poping chutes anywhere near our TF. The result is still the same anyway the aircraft and pilot are lost for the frame.

In here, vox is always available.  Running your gob on TS, while floating in AH, is the equivalent of using a PRC-90 during WWII...it just didn't happen.  I grok.   :aok

And that is the main reason to shoot a chute........  They can still provide radio calls and intel.

Also, I'm with Saxman as well.  There are more than one use of a chute as a tactic in FSO.
