This is one of the few things I have left that my Grandpa and I built together.   He had a shop in his basement and we ended up throwing a lot of our stuff away (stupid) to make room for more stuff, but he passed on in March of 1998.   



The other kids laughed at it, until they lost with their primarily "parent built rides". 

It isn't much to look at, but this Placed 1st in every race, until the very last race in the State of Michigan Finals.   It was Runner Up in the State.   I have the trophy somewhere in the basement.

Ahh, i miss them days. Was always fun building them things. My dad and I built our own rides...mine was an imitation of a dragster and my dads was something like you'd see off of a sci-fi film          great racing cars, we were our own competitors. Blew everyone else off the track. I think my dads car is still around....i'll try and muster it up and take a picture

This year's car was a bit more conventional 

Deadly fast, though.   

I made him do all the wheel and axle work by himself and he took 2nd in the district race out of 100+ kids.

Once the Smithy arrives though, he has until January to learn how to use it.  I told him that he is mostly on his own this time as it is his last year in cub scouts so last year for the pinewood race.  With a lathe/mill at his disposal, I can't imagine what he will want to make this year

i too was a boy with a pine wood derby toy!     i made it to district   and lost my ass!

Dad had the buddy who had the belt saw and sander.   Then we gouged it out  and melted some LEDFORD(lead) in to it.   dont forget the graphite on the wheels!
