VR Helmets for AH
« on: October 20, 2001, 10:06:00 AM »
Is this possible?  If so would a 2nd mortgage pay for it?

Just a helmet mounted tv really with pan setting connected to a sensor on helmet?

Also be interested to know whether its possible for AH to generate output for multiple FE's?  Perhaps taking input from the modem and feeding it to 2 or more instances of AH.  Perhaps then you could reverse the images and beam them onto a mockup of a real cockpit.  Twould be cool.

Anyone have any info about this, I would appreciate it.

check out www.iisvr.com

The VFX-3D would be your answer. I used its previous incarnation (VFX-1) a lot with the likes of EF2000, Commanche 3, Flight Unlimited I & II. Makes quite a difference. You can also enable stereoscopic mode which I think AH supports, it gives you depth perception.

EF2000 rocked with the VFX-1, merging with Migs was an experience, and hitting airfields at low level. Scissoring with a Mig 29 in close... well...  :D

You should be able to map those movement inputs to freelook no problem, ht's joystick interface.

Wow, that is a hunk of cash!

But, it would be cool as hell inside one of these.

  :D

I notice that it has pitch, roll, and yaw axis' but no linear Z. IE, you can't move up and down in the seat.

Zygote, I have disscussed this topic with Hitech while he was online. What I gathered from what he said was that they had experimented with VR, but until a higher resolution helmet became available they were probably not going to pursue it. I think that VR would make AH the primo online sim. Just imagine being able to turn your head while looking for your enemy.  :)   :D

Would be interesting if someone uses the new high resolution flexible lcd type materials to make a vr headset with peripheral vision.

maybe someday.

Wish I could find a link to the story about those.

Hey guys, have you heard about TrackIR? It's cheaper than that VR helmet. Check this review  http://www.simhq.com/simhq3/hardware/reviews/trackir/

Fom I hear, it works well in the IL2 demo. I'm thinking of getting this but dunno if it'll work in AH.

Don't try even compare that TrackIR toejam with a VR helmet.

Its suprising how good VR headsets are even at lower resolutions. Its all about IMMERSION more than anything else. The peripheral vision thing isn't much of an issue when ur eyeballs are up against the eye pieces. Its amazing how fast you adjust to the limited FOV. I spose its like the Nightvision pieces US Helo pilots use.

There are some pointers you should note about VR Headets:
 - VR Sickness is real. Some people are more susceptable to it than others. I had a friend puke after using my headset. It seems to be the motion-sickness vunerable lot. Another aspect of VR Sickness is the 'tweak' after affect, if you play for extended period you can get 'tweaky', especially if its FPS games like Quake, or what I played alot : Dark Forces, Terminator 2, and System Shock
 - VR Headsets are like underwear, you don't wear someone elses (too much)
 - You have to relax your vision, train yourself to use it, then the enjoyment will be much higher.
 - VR is best used in a darkened room, blocking out ALL other visual cues really helps alot.

Commanche 3 was a cool experience, it had stereoscopic support, each eyepiece recieved a slightly different picture to give an illusion of depth. You could edge the chopper right up to the hills real close.

If I had the $$$ (alas I'm married now, my old VFX-1 got sold...) I woulda had a VFX-3D on a plane here as soon as they were released.

Awwwwww I've been officially advised not to persue the VR helmet matter by my financial (fanatical) advisor aka the wife.

I'm just glad AH does'nt support it, less painful.  Gonna secretly save some penny's in my jock draw thou, only place the wife does'nt snoop.  God bless slovenlyness

  :D

btw thanx guys for info
