Anti Virus Software Than Can Be Unloaded at Run Time
« on: April 06, 2010, 07:58:48 PM »
Does anyone know of a decent anti-virus program that can be unloaded at run time?

I used Kaspersky a few years ago and liked the way you could basically unload all of its running process by simply shutting it down...or ending the process in the task manager...

Presently I have eSet nod32 but hate the way it wont let you turn it off...

AVG is the same way...you can't turn it off...

Other than Kaspersky are there any other options?

I use and like Avast.  It lets me shut it down or put it in "gaming mode."  I don't know what gaming mode is exactly, but I just don't trust it, so I set it to shut down until restart, works just fine.

that is strange, do you have it set up to show just the "basic" window? or something?

I have used NOD32 in the past, and currently I use ESET SS4 ( Smart Security ie...NOD32 & more ), I use the Advanced View setting, but anytime I want to disable anything, all I got to do is right click, I can disable real-time file system protection, disable anti-virus, disable anti spyware and disable my firewall anytime I need or want to...... when I disable it, the processes shutdown & close out , leaving only the egui loaded (so you can start it back up when your ready ) iirc.....

AVG and Avast are horrible.  If I had a quarter for every friend/family member who's I had to help with a virus because they used either of those AV programs, I'd have a couple bucks.  The only one I've been satisfied with for performance in both detecting, eliminating, and also low foot-print on the PC is ESET Nod32.

I never liked the AVG at all, but I've not had any problem at all with the Avast.  Of course, I handle any of the problems on this computer anyway and am pretty on top of it, but I haven't had any infections at all running it.  And that's with an 8 year old girl on it and a GF who liked to use Limewire.

I hear nothing but good about Nod32, and wouldn't mind giving it a shot though.  I just haven't had a serious reason to change yet.

Disabling it is not a problem...I want to UnLoad it totally...

Try turning it off then going to task manager and choose stop process...it won't let you...and it still sits there chomping up all that ram...

Threatfire, plus it doesn't tie up resources like most AV products do.

How much ram is it "chomping up" and how much system ram do you have?

The best AV is yourself.

Well, no one like McAfee but you can shut everything down quite easily through the UI.

But that begs the question, why not just shut what you have down in the services menu?

use whatever you like, then run FSAutostart before firing up AH :aok

After FSAuto I have 18 processes running under XP (inc saitek sw and driver, audio drivers etc)

I game with ESET SS4 running and have NEVER had a problem.   Your PC is the problem, not the A/V program.   Buy more RAM, better CPU or both.

When I had my Pentium 3, I had XP SP1 (SP2 added 6 processes alone) and played AH with 13 Processes total.   Most make the mistake and put SP3 on an inadequate PC and blame the software/OS.

I had a pentium 4 2.8 3 gigs of ram, 35 processes and played the game fine with fps at around 40.  its not how many processed you have, its how many "big" processed u run.  I also had mccaffey, dumped it for esset and fps really didnt change.
