Fishing........ Its your story....
« on: April 13, 2010, 07:56:48 AM »
True Story:

Years ago, while fishing down river from the Anacoco Lake Spillway in Louisiana, a few of my friends and I decided we found a decent spot in the river that was slower moving to bank fish for Bass.
After several hours in the Hot/Humid Summer Sun of casting and retrieving with only a few bites we decided to pack it up and head back up to the car empty handed, before everyone could gather everything up I protested for one more cast, figuring that one more throw will do it.

As I casted out as far as I could, I started to reel all the line in praying for just one fish, just one.
As the lure came near, I could tell I would not be going home with anything but a sunburn, but just as the my lure broke the surface as I was standing on a 10 ft bank I noticed that there was a line on my hook, figuring someone had thrown some line in the water and conscience about trash in the waterways I started to wind up the line to throw it away, this went on for some time, pretty soon I had a large ball of line when suddenly I feel some weight on the line, continuing to gather the line to see what is there a Rod breaks the surface, I was excited since it was "finder keepers" and it was a very nice rod and reel, so I start to wind up all the line I had retrieved back into the open face reel, luckily I only had a couple of knots to undue and eventually the line ran out into the water, thinking that maybe I have a cool lure as well on the other end.

Suddenly the line got taunt, gave it a little tug thinking maybe there is a snag, felt like it freed itself and slacked up a bit, so I resumed reeling in the line, when out of nowhere that pole nearly was yanked out of my hands and back into the water, now I realized what happened, some fisherman had his pole yanked from its holder while bank fishing up river somewhere.

The fight continued for a few more minutes since I did not want to lose the fish, it was the only catch for us all day.  I got the fish up to the bank and walked it down to where I could get to it, it ended up being a 14 LB cat.
You could imagine the bragging rights on that one, to this day my friends still talk about it and was rubbing it in good on our way out.

The best part about this story is, that I found the guy that lost the pole, I offered him his pole, but he didn't accept it as he wrote it off already as lost, so I offered him the fish that got away from him instead, Gladly he accepted and fried him up for sure.....  :lol

:lol Maybe I wasn't clear enough when I said "years ago", this was at least 25 years ago and cathing a 14 pound cat isn't uncommon in LA anyone from down yander will verify that one, usually people don't make a big deal out of that size, not until you start getting into 50+ LB cats, you should see the size of cats that people ARE proud of showing a picture of - 100LB+ cats!

NO!!! Please keep it covered, none of us wants to see your bare witness...however as a Southern boy from Lousiana/Mississippi area that fished the rivers and bayous in both states, I can bear witness to the fact that a 14lb catfish is a decent catch but nothing worth really bragging about unless it's your first fish or you caught it on an ultra light rig. Their bodies are such that they carry a lot of weight in a compact shape...so it takes a pretty hefty catfish to be impressive in a photo.

Went fishing a few years ago with a new girlfriend - you know the score, show her you can do the fishing thing (yes, she liked fishing), have a nice day out, in the sun, on the waves kinda deal.

Things were going so well.......well, until I sat on a cardboard box of 1/0 size hooks - things went rapidly downhill from then on. Her having to help pull them out of my backside, along with the merriment of the rest of the fishing crew I used to hang around with. She didn't last long after that lol........

Caught a specimen plaice off the beach a few years ago, but nothing spectacularly big since.

I was working as a deckhand a few years back. We got laid up for weather since a hurrican was bearing down on us, we were tied up near Pensacola, and afterwards I went fishing. The sea cats there beautiful. I caught a few and threw them all back. Well the next morning, the other deck hand woke me up telling me about the monster of a sea cat he caught, but as he go it up to the boat, it broke his line. That after noon. I broke out my ulta light equipment, 5 pound test. I hooked into something nice, as my pole went upside down U. This fish was probable around 12 pounds, as a good 30 min fight went on. Well I landed the guy on the deck, and went to retrieve my hook, low and behold there was my friends rig, still stuck in its mouth. I hollered up to the wheelhouse, and Jim came down, I said hey this your rig. He walked off real pissed as I threw the fish back. He didnt talk to me much the remainder of that hitch.

went looking for some pics, heres what they basically look like.

Forgot who said this while trying to take a base, but the quote goes like this. "I cant help you with ack, Im not in attack mode" This is with only 2 ack up in the town while troops were there, waiting. The rest of the town was down.

No idea...I can only guess the hungry kind.  :)

It flipped it onshore and we gave it plenty of room to do it's thing. By then the weather was clearing up and we were back on our bikes and ripping down the mountain. When we got back to the creek later on that night, everything was gone.

I used to live at Surfside when I was a kid.  Fished all up and down there and Quintana, both jetties and the old and new rivers to boot.  We used to have a bayhouse out in the bay there too, by the Titlum Tatlum cut of Christmas bay.  My dad still lives in Brazoria.  I plan to go there this summer and get some fishing in.

Now that I have never seen before...just judging from the markings and the coloration on its head that snake is a copperhead. Never heard of one killing a fish before...frogs and such yes.

I have seen alot of snakes in my life but never one do that myself, the old wise tale of snakes biting underwater just went out the window too!   :old:

Not sure what it is though, looks alot like a Canebrake/Timber Rattler.  Not so sure about it being a copperhead.

Twizzty, I notice your from Florida, did you see this snake in Florida? If so, the one you seen looks similar to the species that is from Florida and it would be a Canebrake.
