Heh!  I'd keep it as well.  Sometimes just having something that big and impractical is just plain fun.  Only thing that sucks about it is, after firing off a cylinder, you probably aren't feeling much like reloading it to take another five shots.

I'd say that that qualifies as being one of the 'few hanguns' that would stop a charging grizzly.  It, anything with 'Linebaugh' in the caliber designation, a few others.  It's small enough to be handy for carrying it in bear country versus something real like a rifle or shotgun.  They generally aren't looking for trouble, unless they are.

Good luck with it. Do us a favor and let us know how much the ammo costs for that thing.

If your worried about bears, bear spray only costs $50 and is more effective at stopping a charging grizzly then most handguns.

Me... I'm not that paranoid about bears, I've spent hundreds of nights in bear country, just bear bag your smellables and set up your camp right and they won't bother you.  I only carry bear spray because my job requires it, I've had close encounters with about a dozen black bears and two grizzlies and never even though about using it.  Contrary to what some urbanites think, bears do not go around looking for campers to eat.

As for the SW 500, If you don't want the money off it for something else, I'd keep it.  As others pointed out blowing stuff up and/or putting big holes in it just for kicks can be a real blast.  Sure there is no practical use for a handgun of that caliber, but who cares.

I'd be entirely surprised to hear of a blackbear out-right attacking someone, unless maybe you get near it's cubs. Overall they seem to be pretty shy. Not so sure on Grizzlies on the other-hand, I'd avoid them if at all possible.

Oddly enough I know a guy who carries a DE .50AE every day. He's not much bigger than I am. With a proper holster and garments, anything is possible. Not saying that I'd carry one, but it is being done. .45-70 rifle rounds are about $2 a pop. Un-reload .50 is about $1.50 a pop. I wouldn't put the .500 much past that. Large caliber guns, when no purpose is intended...are just outright fun. Go shoot a watermelon...heck, go shoot anything with it. Will be the best $400 you've probably ever spent. (No, I don't own one...but I have shot a non-ported barrel version..and it was rough...but sure was fun)

Well, I tried it.. I believe "violent" is the correct word for it, no doubt.. Gunwise, I have never been part of the monster pistol crowd. Never really saw the point to them unless you a going undercover, among a bunch of those gangbangin polar bears... I wouldn't have bought it if it wasn't for the buddy needs cash deal, even for 400 smackers..  Just not my kind of thing..
The guy said he had only fired it 3 times, and two chambers in the cyl had no burn marks at mouth, and the box of ammo had only 3 spent cases, so his statement rang true.. I'm in it right, will sell it eventually, but will hold on to it for awhile, kinda as a gag deal... My kids want to try it.. And you know how, there are guys ya meet, who yap about how they love shootin them "Big Guns", but when ya talk to em about it in detail, they really don't know doodleysquat?  Well, I'll pull this out of my saddlebag, slap it in his hand, and say, "OK, give this a go bigmouth!", it's put up, or shut up time!    It's the perfect unit for that purpose!

It was a warm sunshine day today, so saddled up Little Bill for a ride.. Little Bill, is an 8yr old stud, has taken me on many an elkhunt, he doesn't run as fast as some of my other horses, but he'll run all day..  He is my buddy, loves me, rock steady. Definately not gunshy anymore, but he don't like this one very much.. This gun has a massive muzzle flash/blast, even in daylight.. It gives the full body smack from the concussion, like standing near a 155 howitzer when it goes off, BA-WOOM.. Bill don't like that too much..

The gun is brandnew S&W all the way, shoots great. Fired 10 shots total, first shot was right in the X ring.. The rest were scattered all over a standard pistol bullseye target at 20 paces.. But, thats my fault, not the pistol.. Pretty typical for one of these things, lol! Overall, Its not as bad as my mind conjured up.. But I'm a big guy, with a lifetime of exp at this gun stuff.. I could get used to it, shoot it much better, but would never use it as a saddle pistol, too hard to fire one handed, (yes I tried)..  it has a good grip, but hurts the thumbweb anyway.. Not as bad as onehanded shootin both barrels of 12ga coachgun, with 3in magnum heavy buckshot loads. It is WAY more felt recoil than a .50AE Desert eagle tho, not even close!

LOL, around here we have the black bears, midnight campground raiders, nothing to worry about, if you aren't foolish.. But the thing to worry about are the cougars, and mountain lions, we have both! Odds are, they will see you, way before you see them, and they won't back off from a accidental confrontation with a mounted rider either.. Pay attn to your horse, he'll sense them long before you do.. They follow the elk herds, the same way I do.. I've run into them many times on a herds backtrail, eyes locked together for several minutes, 20/30 feet away, saying "I DARE YA!"  Both waiting for the other to flinch or look away.. Ya don't look away, until they walk away! If ya do, they might very well make a move on ya!  It's definately one of the thrills of living around here! I carry a 629 mountain gun for that situation, because I can shoot it one handed.. A .45LC or .357 would work for that too tho.

I don't know what ammo costs, came with 2 boxes of shells..
Next time I'll have the wifey go with me, see if she can get a pic of the 5 foot wide muzzle blast, lol!

A guy called me, said he wanted to sell a gun he bought last year.. No gunshops would take it, because the market is so small for this kind of thing.. I bought it because the guy is a buddy, and he needed the money.. Gave 400$ for it, gonna try it today :uhoh
Generally I don't go for this kind of thing, but the price was right, so WTF ya know!
This is a size comparison between a S/W combat seven shot .357magnum, vs .500magnum S/W..
Wadda ya think? Are the revolver gods gettin WAY outta hand here?  :rofl :rofl :rofl

I'd say that that speaks volumes...   First shot hits true, but the next next nine are scattered...  If it were a more "normal" round you probably wouldn't have had the "flinch" issue...

These giant pistol rounds are mere novelty, IMHO...  If you are arelooking for a defense round, choose a .40 or .45, or maybe that new Taurus revolver that shoots the 410 shells...

hey rip,
if I recall the 500 has a shoot life of 1500 rounds before it has to be re barreled and re worked by SnW.

nice piece though. i have shot one a few times, blasted powder back in my face.

kinda reminded me of the D/E win mag.

If you ever had to brandish that as a threat to someone else...

i don't think you would even have to fire it off at all.

Todd

Guns aren't for brandishing.

If I ever feel the need to draw, the person that I'm drawing down on had better made peace with his maker.

Never will I draw my weapon from it's holster to make a point or a threat.

It will be to add at least 2 new holes in what I am aiming at, very close to center mass.

Thanks for the report. Sounds like similar experiences of others with major caliber handguns. You certainly don't have to worry about bringing enough gun to any fight.
