"Before we got the WW1 arena, I would not have guessed all the fighting would be at 100ft. or less."

It wouldn't be if there was a proper WW1 arena where the fighters flew to attack high-flying recce two-seaters and bombers, instead of just a Great War DA mosh-pit.

I would have guessed it would be on the deck, just look at the WW2 arenas. You don't see everyone flying at 25k in LW do you? instead you see 5-8k as a norm

Before we got the WW1 arena, I would not have guessed all the fighting would be at 100ft. or less.  At least a few thousand feet.  Oh well, it's still a neat clip.  I never saw the movie.  Guess I'll have to make some offline missions to get this type of fighting.  I love the arena, just don't understand why all the fighting has to cut the grass at the same time. :headscratch:

Because people want instant gratification. They up and fly straight to the furball without spending a few seconds to gain some altitude. The same mentality that porks fields in the MA with suicide 190 runs, or the bomb in bail toolshedders, or ho ho ho's everything in sight like it's a FPS. It's not the arena, it's the players.

*this isn't aimed at you Ranger. just something that ive been thinking about with my limited time on these days.

One of my staff brought me my copy of The Red Baron this morning.  I don't know where or how she got it but I will give it a watch tonight.

I see your point Wab, and don't necessarily disagree with it.

However the BOSS has spoken, and once he decides something getting him to change can be tough.

IMJ, If you wanted to motivate observation, you'd need to motivate it for the same cause as RW: putting art'y on target. That means art'y duels and ground-taking.

Ghosts,

Well two points:

1.    “The Boss” has always struck me as a pretty reasonable guy.  He doesn’t blow with the wind, but he has been willing to make changes to the WWII arena design over the years to try and optimize the player experience based on what’s working and what’s not.

2.   There is a loophole.  ;)  HT said the WWI furball arena will not have strat added to it.  Of course not.  That’s why it’s a furball arena.  But when we add the WWI MA arena as I suggested here: http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/index.php/topic,287276.0.html , We will not be under any such constraints.  So HT’s earlier statement remains perfectly correct.   There will be a WWI furball arena for quick mindless fun (Like WWII has with its DA furball lake), as well as a strat enabled WWI MA for a richer gaming experience.  Everybody wins!

(And again, sorry for the hijack Ranger! ;))

Regards,
Wab

I just feel like such an alt monkey because I like to climb to a few thousand feet.  Very rarely do I run into anyone co-alt.  I always end up having to chop throttle & dive down into the lawncutter mix.   :joystick:

Wab I'm totally in favor of that approach.

Ranger it seems the older I get the closer to the ground I prefer to fly.

Seldom break 2k in there, although to be historically accurate we should have 6 - 8k observation flights.
With fighters trying to claw their way above those.

This film was better no CGI here. Just honest to goodness low level dogfighting in real aircraft. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HxWHdFAW2jI&feature=related

Historically inaccurate but you can't have everything. On the point of low level dogfighting, as it happens that film "Von Richthofen & Brown" was filmed here in Ireland when I was a kid. So we kids got used to dogfights and overflights of formations of British and German aircraft. Plus one evening near my house I saw a duel between a 'German' and a 'British' aircraft on the deck so close I could see the pilots' goggles. It was insane. Not part of the film at all but must have been something unofficial between the pilots concerned.

I'll have to renew my subscription to AH ASAP, credit card permitting. :frown:

Just a quick followup for anyone interested...The Red Baron is Flyboys redux with some better flying scenes.  Jumps around alot too.  I enjoyed it but too much love story and not enough flying imho.

It looks like it's available in BlueRay. I'll have to get my paws on a copy. FlyBoys,  I thought, pretty well sucked. It wasn't the flight sequences, it was the thinly-veiled Ho'wood underlying narrative (does racism have to permeate everything? do all historical events have to be judged by the prevailing standards of Ho' wood 2000+?) and the grade-school acting.

I found myself hoping the bad guy would slaughter James Franco, the stupid hook guy, the black boxer, the chickensh*t, all of them. Only the ho'monger squad leader was a character to whom I could relate, and, while that actor was fairly compelling, the dialogue served him was particularly formulaic.

As for too much clunge ruining the film, well, maybe, but there was precious little in FB. Given Ho'wood's bent, I'm surprised they didn't rewrite the Lafayette Escadrille as being manned by convincing lezzers (Raoul Lufbery as a chick in drag?). They'da probably had more balls than the clowns in this movie.

Next, ask me why the wrong side won in Avatar.

 keep reaching for the sky.  It's a larger scale production movie, don't expect it to be accurate.  Save that for books and some documentaries.

Red Baron was a disappointment.  Obviously the CGI was excellent but that couldn't make up for the screenplays shortcomings.
Large scale production...hmm....Longest Day ring a bell in the accurate sense?

That would have been a better movie if they had avoided the romance but it ended up being another Pearl Harbor movie with the only redeeming trait being special effects.

Actually it was pretty enjoyable.

Note the context of those battles.

Bombers on the way to vital targets.

Interceptors trying to stop the bombers getting to their target.

Escorts trying to stop the interceptors.

Ballons, attacks on ballons, defense of ballons.

Purpose.  Goal oriented battle.  Conflict.  Drama.  Excitement. Fun.

(BTW, it looks like that movie would ROCK!)
