Soft Gun
« on: April 19, 2010, 12:03:31 AM »
Always wondered..... Why is it called that?
Does it fire the same caliber as auto ack? You can take a couple hits from the auto ack, but a hit from the soft gun will take a plane down.

Always wondered about that.

Thanks

I believe the soft gun fires 30mm rounds, and the auto ack fires either 20mm or 50cal. But don't quote me as I never use them.
Soft gun also takes 15min to re-up while the auto ack takes 45min.

Guessing but likely due to there is "Hard gun" and "soft gun".  CV 5" gun is considered a "Hard gun", and the guns on fields (clearly less durable) are "soft guns".

"Does it fire the same caliber as auto ack?"

Soft-gun fires 37mm rounds, and I think (but far from sure) that Auto is 20mm.

You are wrong.

Airfields guns with the single barrel are 37mm (same as on the Ostwind). CVs have some quad 40mm mounts along the side of the tower, and the escort ships have a lot of single 20mm mounts (like you see on the PT boat).

Hard guns refer to hardened positions, armor-covered guns. Therefore a gun without this must be "soft," no?

Not sure it's an official WW2 term, but it's a logical description. That had to call it something.

I was referring to the airfield guns that shoot automatically(autos), not the manned-guns that people can occupy. I'm not sure if this a bit of confusion or not but I know for a fact that the autos aren't 37mms or getting close to a field would be tantamount to suicide. Even 20mm seems like a stretch considering my A6M can often survive multiple hits from auto guns.

I believe at one point mannable acks took less ordinance to destroy compared to the auto-acks. Not sure if that's still the case.

Only takes a cannon round or two. "hard" guns on ships, on the other hand? They take bombs. Hence "hard" targets vs "soft" ones.

That isn't entirely accurate either since I have destroyed "hard" guns on on ships with the 75mm mounted on a B-25 before. Yes I die doing it more times than not but I have done it.

Of course, that 75mm has the explosive power of a rocket or two, or a small bomb. It's not quite comparable to "guns" normally.

Soft Guy = Soft Target=easy to kill.   Its not auto ack, it doesn't fire at you unless someone is in the position, there for while unmaned it's considered a Soft target.  Buildings in the town, once the town ack is down, are Soft Targets.
A C47 would be considered a Soft target.
