Looking for some good reference books
« on: April 24, 2010, 06:10:44 PM »
I've decided to do some research into the ACW and I guess this is the best place to ask. I cant say I have ever had an interest in it before, but having been donated a stash of fiction books relating to the subject, I'm looking for some suggestions for informative non fiction. I dont want a massive collection, just 2,3 or maybe 4 based on recommendations from you guys.

Stuff I'd prefer -

Maps, important because my US geography sucks
Lots of images of battlefields, weapons, key players etc
Nothing too heavy as far as subject matter is concerned

Its a big ask considering how much stuff is out there, but any good ideas would be great

Not entirely sure about reference books but if you really want to get a feel for the era, watch Ken Burn's mini series "The Civil War"

Parts of it will choke you up.
