I have a question for you. Do you consider auto racing, of any type, a sport?

Well, no.  But what is a sport by definition?

I have a question.  Is NASCAR a sport?  If so, what constitute it as a sport?

chess is a sport. i think anthing where 2 people compete to achieve a common goal is a sport. hell, speed jerking would be a sport if they thought anyone would watch it

I've thought Tony Stewart was a total sweetheart since a road race a few years ago.  Several times he would "pass" someone by entering a turn way too fast, and ram his car between the inside curb and a guy already established on the line.  His impact would provide enough additional turning force so he could make it around the turn, and the guy he rammed would end up in the wall or gravel.

That was bad enough (and nascar officials are too clueless to penalize him for a trick that would get him black flagged in any other league) but after doing this for a few dozen laps, he cut down a tire in a particularly brutal impact and started whining on TV about how he was the victim.  On a superspeedway, you don't wedge your car in like that because doing so is a great way to die, and he's not suicidal.  But on a course with lower speeds, he has no problem ramming other cars out of the way and whining about it when he pretty much wrecks himself out of the race.  What a jerk.  He is the ONLY driver I cheer when he gets wrecked...  The only one.

Everyone I know, goes away, in the end.

It's not NASCAR anymore...it's the wannabe squad.

Bobby Allison, Cale Yarborough, Darrell Waltrip, Junior Johnson, Benny Parsons, Bill Elliot, Richard Petty...they were NASCAR

What he said.

On that note, I go with Kasay Kahne in the #9, since he replaced Bill Elliot.  212.809 mph will never ever be beaten again at Talladega as long as restrictor plates are involved.    :rock

Decent (not the best) driver, but seems to be getting better aside from the turmoil that Evernham has been going through.  I've been a fan since his first Cup race EVER in which he almost beat Junior at Daytona.

I've gotten his autograph on a few incarnations of his cars over the past few years.

Anxious to see what happens with him at Hendricks.

Jeff Gordon is a good driver that has raced with the old regime and the new and I have a lot of respect for him but he is, without a doubt, a whiner.

Jimmy Johnson is simply a spoiled sweetheartbag.  One whom, I may add, would not have half the success he has achieved if he had to make his mark with old school drivers such as the ones mentioned above by Gyrene.  I think he would piss himself if he had to deal with to old heads blasting the ole "chrome horn"  I think he also has ridden the coattails of, and benefited greatly from the Hendricks/Gordon combination.  I honestly do not think he would have achieved as much with another team.

Comparing NASCAR to F1, Indy, or any other motorsports is silly.

F1, Indy, Grand Prix, LeMans are what they are which is a (not to offend NASCAR fans) more "pure" form of racing. Understandably bumping with open-wheel cars is inherently more dangerous.  To me at least, NASCAR has always been about drafting, trading paint, pushing the slow guy out of the way, and getting put into the wall by someone if you don't mind your manners on the track.

NASCAR has come a long way from it's roots.  Junior Johnson was one of the last of a dying breed.  It is a sport created by redneck moonshiners out of the necessity to maintain that weekly adrenaline rush that one was used to getting from delivering 'shine and running from the cops in a VERY fast car designed and created by the driver out of a need to stay one step ahead of the law.  Nowadays the cars are far from "stock" as the NASCAR acronym alludes to.  There used to be a day when the cars that were being raced were driven to and from the track.

I have hardly watched any NASCAR for the past few years as the rules and cars have changed.  Now that a little more "touchy-feeley" is allowed on the track, I have watched more races this year than I have in the past 4 or 5.

They're trading paint again?  :D I might have to start watching again.

Could you imagine some of these new drivers on Daytona or Talledega with Petty, Allison and Waltrip yanking on each other?  None of this restrictor plate, illegal suspension tuning nonsense...just let the crew chief build the fastest car the driver can hold on the track...I'd bet quite a few would go back to the dirt tracks or quit.

Talk about racing cars...

I saw a Junior Johnson interview once where he said the fastest car he ever drove was a moonshine car. And this was AFTER he retired from NASCAR.  :lol

I really don't have a favorite driver right now. I'm a Ford fan and they are really behind in the power department the last few years. I used to follow Mark Martin, but when he went to Chevy I lost all respect I had for him. I'll tell you who I absolutely do not root for and that's Junior. He's a spoiled, no talent, rich kid living off his Daddy's name. If his last name was Smith, Jones or anything besides Earnhardt he wouldn't be racing or making commercial endorsements. The one thing he has done that I can give him credit for was leaving DEI and telling his stepmother to KMA.
My mind is a raging torrent, flooded with rivulets of thought cascading into a waterfall of creative alternatives.
Stay thirsty my friends.

Dick Trickle was great, he rode the inside perfectly.

No offense, he was a JERK! I met him years ago at Slinger Super Speedway as a kid
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slinger_Super_Speedway

He was a total jerk to us kids, wouldn't sign anything and was rude.

Alan Kulwicki on the other hand was cool as poop! he has to be my all time favorite, Matt Kenseth next. Us Yankees have had some good drivers, but never seem to get the same respect or coverage from those southern nascar boys.

Here's a bucket of AWESOME

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_j8794XvcN4

Neil Bonnett, Bobby Allison, Joe Shear, Mark Martin, Bobby Dotter, Dick Trickle, Alan Kulwicki, Johnny Ziegler and Mark Martin all in the race, I can't help but wonder if I was at this race... Johnny Ziegler was my favorite back then, he never made it to the big time, but was a legend in these parts.

<EDIT> I have to say thank you OP, what a walk down memory lane. Some great moments of my childhood. If only I still had that denim jacket with all the patches of the racers sewed on from back then.

BS.  What you describe simply doesn't happen in NASCAR.  You are either grossly exaggerating the situation or it just didn't happen.

Clueless dolt.

It was one of the road courses that NASCAR does (used to do?) a few years ago, one of the few times I actually marked my calendar to watch the race.  I can't remember the track but Steward used the same move at the same right-hand turn corner for a number of passes until he cut down a tire pushing down underneath a driver who was legitimately holding his line.
