I can sum it up in one word

"angles"
That seems like a rather generic answer to me.

One thing I have noticed that many of the "top" sticks do different from most players is the type of Pursuit they use.

The vast majority of players fly Lead Pursuit.
(one reason we have so many headons btw)

Many, if not most, of the "top" sticks fly in Lag Pursuit on the merge.  Once they have position they switch to Pure Pursuit and only switch to Lead Pursuit when it is time to shoot.

They fly for position as opposed to a gun solution.  They know the gun solution will come.  When they merge they are setting themselves up for a gun solution later in the fight.  It could be one move, it could be 10, but they are planning for it.  A key there is to be able to adapt your moves depending on what your opponent does.  Almost every fight is different so you have to be able to adapt.

Some of the great sticks had a move, or a series of 1-3 moves that would almost always give them a shot.  ManeTMP comes to mind.  Mane had a set couple moves that were really effective and he had great aim and rarely missed.

I know I spent hours and hours watching some of the great masters of the game fly and fight in King of the Hill tourneys over the past 9 ish years.  I spent countless hours watching films of their fights and many more countless hours wagging my hands about the air trying to figure out just what they did and how.

Then it was even more hours practicing what I had learned and countless deaths trying it out in the Arenas until it "clicked".

(edit: I would add that in AirWarrior I was taught by some fantastic pilots in the WidowMakers who really knew their stuff so I had some really good teachers when I was first learning to fly)

I got to go to work I'll explain what I mean tonight.  Lute makes a good point about lag, pure, and lead pursuit - you almost always see your opponent go for lead when there increasing their own angle of attack which is one of my generic angles post :)

Best stick in the game is the common shrub.

It can stop dead in its tracks and/or flip completely upside down a 68 tonn Tiger tank just by bumping into it and obliterate any low fling aircraft without so much as loosing a leaf.

It has a kill death ratio of 10,000/0

I have a very fond memory of kappa and myself fighting back in the FR arena of  Air Warrior......

Kappa was in a P51D and I was in an F6f-3...... I was not sure whether kappa had run out of ammo or was low on fuel.. but in our fight he went to land and he rolled into a Hangar and was sitting there.... I was just barely able to see the nose of his plane... I kept trying to shoot him and all he would do is just "LOL" over the text buffer.... his "LOL" taunt just made me all the more determined to nail him hiding in the hangar... until I finally crashed or think I actually auger-ed right into the side of the Hangar.. this was like 11 or 12 years ago, but I remember it like it happened last night....

over the years we have had some "Palm sweating" fights even here in Aces High,  the last memorable encounter was several years ago. kappa was in his P38 and I was in my F4U.....  we went at it 3 or 4 different times and think we broke about even in that encounter.... either 3 to 1 or 2 to 2 whatever, it doesn't really matter who won or lost to me.... I remember him hanging on those props trying to get me to stall out under him for the easy kill.. sometimes I would take the bait and fail other times I faked my E state and reversed the outcome....

always was a pleasure to go up against Kappa......

I really should do some more reading on ACMs, because I don't know the different between lag and lead pursuit.  I'm sure I've done both in the past at one time or another, but didn't know it  :lol

I reckon I need to break down and buy me some Robert Shaw huh.... :uhoh

lead is pulling for a shot so  your aiming to get your nose pointing infront of the guy.

lag is  keeping your nose behind the con and waiting for a better opportunity.  your still turning with him.  I find this most useful when your countering some aggressive overshoot moves.

and pure pursuit is having the nose of your plane directly on your opponent  :aok ( lol, just couldn't resist Bruv )
