White cliffs of Dover..
« on: May 19, 2010, 12:47:50 PM »
It would be really nice if we could get the white cliffs of Dover on the maps of Britain. It would add a lot to the game I think.
Especially as the map is in use right now in AvA, with darkness at night, it would be really nice to see those white cliffs brighten up in the dark horizon.

And speaking of darkness.. Why is there no cockpit instrument lights in any of the planes? In IL2 you can toggle them on/off with shift-L or was it cntrl-L?, anyway.. would be nice to have that feature in AH too?!  :aok

Afk for a year or so.  The name of a gun turret in game.  Falanx, huh?
Apparently I'm in the 20th FG 'Loco Busters', or so the legend goes.

What do you need instrument lights for? It doesn't get dark in the main arenas...and you do have a gamma adjustment to adjust the lighting.

I don't NEED instrument lights, but it sure would add something nice to the realism.. And by the way, yes it did get pretty dark in AvA last night, adjusting gamma would just ruin the realism of the night..

In the AvA? I never have an issue with seeing my instruments when it gets dark there...have you given thought to the idea that instruments lights might have a certain graphics effect that would make you easier to spot?

If you can't see your instruments at "night", it's because your gamma is set too low for your particular monitor and video card combination. Also, the landing lights with reflections in the cockpit, activate when the wheels go down.
Easy in-game again.

I did not have any issues about seing my instruments there either, but yes I have given thoughs about using them at night could make me be spotted easier. If that was what you meant?

But that's just what I'm talking about.. Realism. Isn't that just what the real pilots did, turned off their instrument lights to avoid being spotted at night? But atleast they had instrument lights..

But I see your point. Why waste time and effort on something that will only be randomly used, and I guess that's the main reason the lights were left out in the first place..

Yes, I've noticed the light reflections from landing light and Autopilot light also. I had no problem reading my instruments with my gamma setting. That's not what I am talking about, I just thought it would be a nice touch to the game to have instrumentlights. I am kind of a gearhead, I would like to turn all the switches in the cockpit also, but that's another tread..  :lol

The current structure of the terrain system doesn't support cliffs because the finest spatial resolution for altitude grids is 1/2 mile.  The cliffs of Dover are about 350 ft tall and 350 ft over a length of 1/2 mile is only 7.6 degrees.. i.e. the "White Minor Slopes of Dover".  Perhaps it might be possible to simulate them using those little add on hills which give finer control and steeper sides?

Also, the current (well, yesterday) setup in the AvA is programmed to give complete darkness for night, not the dusk that used to be present in the MA.  It's pitch black, especially for people with CRT monitors (which have deeper blacks than LCDs).

I think "white minor slopes of Dover" would be way better than gray beaches of Dover anyway, atleast for a starter.

And yes, the night in AvA last night was pretty much pitch black. But I liked it that way. It was really challenging to fight with complete darkness above the pitch black sea, and with no icons the enemy planes was only vagely visible in the moonlight reflection or against the moon itself.

Atleast for a very few but well selected historical places, well known to all and recognized upon first sight. Like the white cliffs of Dover, they are quite well known to most I think.

I just imagine what meaning the mighty white cliffs had to the RAF pilots who were flying home wounded, almost out of fuel, missing parts.. Seeing the white cliff in the horizon, that means they made it home!  :salute :rock

I don't think I've seen anyone get banned for mentioning a different game.

I HAVE seen people get banned for not only mentioning another game, but insisting that one is correct, this one is wrong, with no amount of convincing to the contrary, either with opinion or in some cases hard fact. Especially when the guy who basically created this sim (and some of the others) answers specifically why something is the way it is and he's told he's wrong... yeah, THAT I've seen get someone banned.

Never just a passing mention. Heck, I've seen screenshots of other sims on this BBS in various places and no one got banned from it. Just as long as you aren't trying to sell something and can have a "give and take" discussion, I wouldn't worry too much about getting banned.

If Hitech want to ban me for mentioning IL2, a game I have but never play. So be it..  :P If I thought IL2 was a better game I wouldn't be here noobing around for some cockpit lights now would I?!  :rofl

But I CAN live without the lights, just so its mentioned. Its just for the eyecandi, and cause I'm a gearhead as mentioned above..  :aok
