Penguin, I don't know if you're posting all of what you do at every opportunity because you've recently discovered these thought processes and think that perhaps no one else has realized these things, or what. The majority of sane people have an inkling of respect for humanity and destroyed innocent lives. By posting it in this situation you only make yourself look like an ass.

The fact of the matter is that there's a time and a place to discuss it. You don't discuss the consequences of what airmen who gave their lives were ordered to do, when others are trying to honor them.
In the same respect, it would be inappropriate to point out that of innocent Iraqis and Afghans have died at the hands of the US military at the funeral of an American serviceman.
Similarly, it's inappropriate and equally stupid to try to make a point that extreme devotion to a flag seemingly above what it's meant to stand for is hypocritical and silly, in a setting where people are honoring that flag.

That's what you need to learn. Keep your mouth shut unless it's appropriate for you to open it.

You make a good point.  I think that I see what you are talking about.

Funny, I never see a thread about all of the poor, helpless german/italin/japanese babies obliderated by their bombs.

i cant believe you just said that...... try all the helpless American/British bomber crews that never had a chance at the hands of the Luftwaffe... start with that before you say something as ignorant and pigheaded as this..... they were just following orders, so help them God if they missed from time to time

I'm rather sure Dresdin was not an accidental drop. I would think trained and armed men thousands of feet in the air traveling at hundreds of miles an hour are a bit less helpless than unarmed unprepared civilians.

Who's your enemy?  Germany?  Japan?  Or the people there?  You see, a flag can be rallied against, but could you really look those other people in the eye and say "I want to see you die, you and all your friends and family" could you say that to an eight year old?  Could you say that to a pregnant girl?  Could you say that to a beggar?  Could you say that to anyone other than the leaders of the country?

Bottom line: if a person from the "enemy" country sent you an email and neither of you knew who the other was- would you automatically hate them?

On bombing though, I agree, bombing factories is dirty work but has to be done, but just carpet-bombing a city is against the Geneva convention.

(And yes, I'm a guy)
In WWII the enemies of the US were the Axis powers.  We fought in response to the attack at Pearl Harbor, not because we 'hated' somebody.  In war you are attempting to impose your will on your enemy.  The means to doing that is using offensive weapons.  People die on both sides.

You are trying to personalize it at an individual level.  Wars are fought on a national one.
The fight is the fun........Don't run from the fun!

that's perfect, well put :aok

and penguin, if you saw the commander of a U.S. Bombardment Group during WW2, what would you do? would you thank him for his courage and sacrifice to our country, or would you spit at his feet and call him a "baby killer"? because what you're saying implies the latter, and that is really disrespectful.

In penguin defense, sadly, the desires of a few (leaders who lead nations into wars) place the responsibility of their actions on people who had no choice in the decision, (the general population). As Goering once said,
Quote
Of course the people don't want war. ... All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for a lack of patriotism, and exposing the country to greater danger.

That being said, this is the wrong place for such a discussion.

yes, it is.

My grandfather's good friend was a bombardier/nose gunner for a B-24. He died in a raid against a German railyard in late 1944. My grandfather never forgets him, and his sacrifice.

Well said, Motherland. Penguin, you're a clever young man but you have a LOT to learn. Remember that a man has two ears and one mouth, so he should listen twice as much as he speaks and then think carefully before he utters a word, if his opinion is to be valued.

"Those who give no mercy deserve none in return." True - but mercy isn't an item of exchange, it's spontaneous and extended without consideration of personal gain or it's NOT mercy, it's something else. If 'an eye for an eye' becomes the rule to live by, the whole world will end up half-blind; the statement credited to a carpenter from Galilee of 'love thy neighbour as thyself' is a much better idea, even if too many people still think that revenge is the best form of justice.

To all those young men who lost their lives or suffered injury in those wrecked aircraft  :salute
