Offline mode SO much easier? Why?
« on: June 12, 2010, 09:47:19 PM »
So I quit, ... for about 9 months.  Just wanted a change of pace and was getting pretty tired of shooting at things for 8 secs dead 6 and watching them fly off.

I found out my internet connection was suffering from major packet loss.  OK so that should account for 'some' of the issues.  I went offline, was able to down planes with 50 cal VERY easily, from side to side - dead 6, up and overs and down and arounds...

Recently rejoined, really liked the idea of a p47m until I realized that once again, it appeared I was shooting blanks.  So again, I took this crate offline and sure enough again, this is a very effective plane..OFFLINE, but online I can't seem to do anything.

Today I nailed a b26, all along the top of the wing, swooped down and nailed it dead 6...nada..not even a control surface flinched.

yesterday and a few other times, I've noticed the same effect.  You think you've got someone, spray them with an awesome deflection shot, nice long one too...then you look and ...NADA.

Very frustrating.

So, I decided that since I first suspected this, I would check out the good ole pingplotter.  One of the reasons for my return, other than missing it, was that my internet provided did a major overhaul of their systems in my area.  I get 0% packet loss now and probably 10 different tests to the servers mentioned in the technical support forums.  Pretty good, perfect actually.  VOIP is once again an option in my area, I think Comcast finally did somethign about it when they started losing almost every VOIP customer.

Well needless to say, this didnt seem to fix things much.

So I got to ask, any ideas?

I once played a game that required fast updating to keep things accurate for gunning, they had issues but eventually updating their game and their servers to four times the speed refresh.  Ping times now were prevalent and many of the rubber bullet complaints were gone.  Is this game still running on an old rusty t1 and some outdated switching equipment or we talking state of the art stuff here now?

Again, just wondering as it's a cause for frustration, and really between having to wait 20 minutes to get onto my server (much longer than I used to) and these seemingly rubber bullets, I'm perplexed.

Don't you think that if it was an HTC server issue that the boards would be full of rubber bullet complaints?

While my aim sucks  I have no problem downing buffs in a single pass. Post a Dxdiag and maybe someone will spot an issue with how you have things set. List your in-game setting.... texture size, which eye candy is on or off, whether you have Vsync on or off.

to add...

It is much easier to hit a drone doing circles offline than in game against a living opponent.

Try some offline missions and see if your gunnery is as good vs. the computer AI.

The internet might be better and a problem that was really there with your connection is now gone, however now you have been gone for nine months.  I think that's probably the problem :lol.

Check the refresh rate on your monitor.  Try lowering it to 60 Hz and see if that makes a difference.

I don't think the same damage model is used offline, personally.

My opinion, only minimally researched.

Same damage model, but when the plane will die is not the same. I.E. many things make it explode.

In one of the more recent updates, a pilot kill results in the plane diving down whereas before it resulted in the plane exploding.

I've hit a few Computer planes to have it dive down and crash into the trees.. probably for this exact reason.

I seem to recall a thread regarding the "rubber bullet" effect relating to "v-sync" in some cases.  My apologies, I don't recall the relationship, i.e. enabled or disabled... does anyone recall that relationship and could it apply to this case?

You normally get rubber bullets if the vsync is off.

The OP might want to do a search on the technical support forum for "rubber bullets"...many of us have had the issue at one time or another.

ty for replies.

Vsync in this game, must be checked to be turned off, by default it appears as on.  I guess they assumed most have lcds at this point, to alleviate issues just enable it.

Definetely feels game related.  Ive had some issues in the past, been around the block.  Also have had many months of fine computer/game performance where everything feels oldhat.

I'm probably going to try to enable it (vsync) at the os level, via the drivers.  I'm also going to test some things offline then online again with someone to figure out my issues..
