AH Won't load with ATI Tray Tools
« on: June 13, 2010, 06:13:06 PM »
Skuzz, you can move this to Hardware and Software if need be, but AH won't load if I have ATI Tray Tools (v. 1.6.9.1486) running.  If I close Tray Tools, then AH loads just fine.

I get "AH Has Stopped working" blah blah blah before it even gets to the splash screen, along with the following errors:
Problem signature:
  Problem Event Name:   APPCRASH

This is with a 5830 and Win7 64 bit.  I can post a DxDiag if need be, but is this a common issue?  This is my first ATI card in years.  Thanks for your time!

I also could not run Ray Adams ATI Tray Tools with my crossfired 3850's in winblows 7 X64 and I was using the latest beta drivers.  You should post this over at his support forum at www.guru3d.com.  I've tried running in compatibility modes to no avail.  I had never received an error, AH just would not run and immediately go back to desktop and this was with various versions of the Tray Tools.  My recourse was to run game booster and let it close before actually hitting the AH game icon.  I despise the ATI Catalyst Control Center and refuse to use it.  I've kinda resorted to play AH in win XP with my 5830.

I've been using ATI Tray Tools since it was first released and never had any sort of issues like the OP has described with it conflicting with other programs.

What version are you running?  Are you running the beta version or the release version?  Have you tried uninstalled ATI Tray Tools and then reinstalling it?  If you install new drivers without first closing down ATI Tray Tools, it can become corrupted because ATI Tray Tools is referencing reg keys that no longer exist, though restarting it usually fixes the problem.

Are you using a profile in ATI Tray Tools that you've set to start up AH when you select the profile?

I have tried various version in Win7 X64 and they just don't like it.  I've just uninstalled version 1472 and cleaned the registry and same thing, no AH start.  I then went through and uninstalled 1472 and cleaned registry and installed 1486 and again, no go.  I've tried it with and without profiles and it just will not run AH.  Now all the versions that I've ever installed worked fine in winblows XP.  This is really racking the old gray matter here.

Yes I'm running version 1486 with no profiles (haven't made or even bothered to play with them yet).  Tray tools was installed AFTER the the V/C drivers (drivers only - no catalyst).

Simply put, AH will not load at all until I right click on the Tray Tools tray icon and select Exit... then it works just fine.

Maybe this should be moved to "bugs" since I'm apparently not the only one hehe

There was an issue with ATT and Windows 7 because of Win7's need to have low level drivers digitally signed which older version of ATT weren't.  I think there was a new version released last month that might have addressed this issue and those using older versions of ATT in Win7 have been able to use the work around of disabling features like overclocking and the on screen display.

You can probably find more infor here ATT Forums

It appears that this has been a long running issue with ATT, found some threads of this problem from 5-6 years ago.  Anyway, from the threads I read about this issue it seems that the way others have been able to resolve this problem is by disabling the OSD (Onscreen Display) in ATT (should be located in the general settings) as it's on by default.

Give it a go and see if it works for you.

That fixed it!  I didn't even know it HAD on screen display!  Haven't had much of a chance to even mess with it, but I unchecked the box that said "Enable On Screen Display" under "Tools and Options", hit OK... and then AH Loaded right up!

Thanks for your help..

Thanks Ack-Ack!  It was the OSD culprit after all.  I feel like such a dipstick as I knew of that problem and just passed over it.  I'm currently running version 1.6.9.1486, what is weird is that I now have total manual fan control with my 5830 card in winblows7 but not with the same version in winblows XP.  I'm not complaining but I like to hear that fan noise so I know it's getting plenty of cooling.  I guess I should feel blessed because of all those with 4800 series and above pretty much have lost manual fan control of their cards.

heya Doc,
was this a typo, or was you really using (2) 3850's in Crossfire mode in windows 7 or in windowsXP?  if so did you experience any significant graphics improvement?

reason I ask, is I currently am using my ASUS HD3870 TOP 512 meg GDDR4 in my PC ( is dualboot OS  winXP & Win 7 ), and I am able to max out everything in windowsXP pro SP3 with frame rate of 69/70 99.5% of the time using HIRES pack / 1024 textures @ 1280x1024.........

and on my Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit, I get 75 max all time with everything turned on  or maxed out in all graphic settings also using 2084 shadow texture size...... ( I do have my anti aliasing slider set to the 3rd notch not sure if that is x4 or x6 or what )

I am totally new to doing anything with dual videocards crossfired or SLI.......

right now I think my Monitor is my limiting factor since it maxes out at 1280 x 1024 70fps in XP  and 1280 x 1024 75 fps in win7  ( this is also the native & recommended screen res setting recommended by DELL, I have a DELL UltraSharp 19" - non-wide Screen LCD )

would I see any better performance if I went to a crossfire setup, since I have a 2nd one of these 3870's just sitting here?  would it reduce the powerload of the one card by splitting the load between 2 of them? or anything?         While playing in aces high, my videocard temp is running around 48 degrees C, under a moderate/heavy load flying around with 20 to 30 icons puffy ack, fire, etc.... in the MA )

thoughts / suggestions?

All of it is important; most of it vital; and all of it just too much for one brain to absorb in 1-2 lessons" TC

Yes it was a typo.  I was running HD 3870's and not 3850's in crossfire mode.  I could run everything maxed out but I really didn't like the shadows so I don't use them.  If you go crossfire mode, make sure you have a good power supply.  I have a cooler master 650 wt and had not had a problem.  I ran crossfire mode in both win XP and Win7 64 bit.  You only need to use Ray Adams ATI Tray Tools and not that CCC junk.  I plan on dropping in another 5830 and crossfire them when I scrape up some more funds.  I'm not sure in the bang for buck department whether it's worth it but if you have a second one lying around, go for it!
