please change the kill system!!
« on: June 26, 2010, 08:48:48 PM »
i have no idea how it works, i think it's whoever lands the most hits, but im tired of getting assists for tearing a guy's wing off! :joystick:

i think it should be changed to a system where whoever shoots out a vital aircraft component, such as a wing, engine, tail components, flames the feul, whatever so that the aircraft has absolutely no chance of making it back safely, and is going down in a matter of seconds.

and not just oil leaks, pilot wounds, radiator hits, etc. because he can still make it back. I've made it back safely from 20K, 2 sectors away from home w/ no elevator, no rudder, and one aileron, as well as half a wing, so none of that, unless the guy crashes, in which case, you get the kill.

Hey Wildcat,

Here's the kill system to the best of my understanding.

The person that gets the kill, is the person who's done the most damage up until the point the vehicle/aircraft suffers a catastrophic failure.

Example : Let's say you tail this plane for 45 seconds, pumping round after round into the plane, but it just doesn't go down. You do 75 points of damage to the left wing, 25 to the left engine, 100 to the left flap, left aerilon, and left vertical stablizer blowing them off, but the enemy pilot keeps on ticking.
A teammate comes buzzing in and in 1 quick machine gun burst, does 33 points of damage to the left wing, blowing it off and sending the enemy aircraft to the ground.

In Aces High's method, YOU get the kill, and not your teammate, because even though your teammate took off the chunk that caused the plane to be the most unstable, you're the one that did the "hard labor". What you're asking for is that 2nd guy to get the kill, the one who did nothing but swoop in after you made it easy for him.

Example #2 : You're tailing an enemy for 45 seconds, pumping round after round into the plane. You damage the enemy's oil system, wound the pilot, and take off the right wing. You watch as the enemy plane (a 190) falls 5k to certain doom. Unknown to you, he recovers about 300 feet from the ground, and stabilizes his plane, barely, even with missing 1/2 his right wing. A few moments later, a teammate sees the wounded 190, and takes a shot at him. In his attempt to avoid the bullets, the 190 gets hit by 1 or 2, but completely loses control due to having his wing blown off.

In Aces High, you get the kill again. Any damage done after that wing was blown off doesn't count toward the kill. Your teammate doesn't even get an assist. However, in your method, you didn't make it so "the aircraft has absolutely no chance of making it back safely", so your teammate would have gotten the kill.

That's why' AH's kill system is the way it is. Personally, I think it's pretty darn fair, when in the heat of battle anyone can switch targets with anyone. Hope that helps some!  :aok

thanks knite :salute

the reason i brought this up is because i believe my system is how it worked in WW2.

Example:
corsair pilot is on the tail of a Ki-84. he pumps rounds into him, smoking his engine. a second Ki-84 shoots at him, forcing him to break off of his target. the corsair pilot's buddy comes in, spots the wounded bird, and kills the pilot, causing the Ki to spiral in. corsair buddy would be credited with the kill because he put the Ki out of commission.

i thought about this when in FSO, i killed a 190 who was smoking, leaking fuel, and possibly had a pilot wound. i shot his wing off, permanently putting him out of commission, yet i got the assist i later found out. even if he was bugging out, since he still could of fought back, shouldn't i get the kill?

Knite,

Your second example isn't entirely accurate as I understand it.  The damage is still counted until he loses the entire wing.

If it was the AAF in Europe, they would each get half.  Otherwise, in real life, he who kills it gets the kill.  The second guy would probably get credit.

In a game, where the number of hits and damage percentage is actually recorded and measured, it's different.

unless you get killed before the other pilot either crashes or bails out.  which I think it is ridiculous, if an airplane is out of commission, then somebody should get credit, not just wait for the crash/bail.

Your only seeing one side of it wildcat.

The other side of it is you saddle up behind some bogey, shoot lots of lead at him, another bogey comes screaming out of nowhere, forces you to go evasive. Eventually you break off, limping home. Meantime someone else comes across your original target, fires a burst, finish's him off, and you get the kill.

Do you really think you should only have gotten the assist?

In the long run it balances out. The assists you get that might have been kills. And the kills you get that might have been assists. And the better you get at killing your own the less of an issue it is.

I agree with semp. Too many times I've had a kill stolen from me because some stuborn guy in the plane won't bail, in the hopes that someone will shoot me down, saving him from giving up a kill.

True, but you must admit that it kind of pisses you off. Its akin to having the brand new car you won in a game show stolen; yeah, you didn't loose anything, but it was YOURS. Like politics, grievances are personal.

I have a problem with this. I think the original shooter SHOULD have only gotten an assist because if it weren't for the second shooter, that bogey would have just landed and no one gets anything.

Actually, it was my understanding that the player that causes the catastrophic damage gets awarded the kill.  I think I remember a specific announcement about this a while back.  I could be wrong though.

The change was: No damage inflicted after some catastrophic damage occurred is counted for kill credit purposes. But it's still: Player with most damage gets the credit.
