Another RC plane...
« on: July 13, 2010, 12:52:42 PM »

After a few years of gas-powered flight, I'm finally getting back into some "real" flying!  Here's a few shots of my current project, almost ready to go.  I'll be working on covering it today, hopefully it'll be airworthy in a few days (depending on other commitments).

132" span.  It's a modified OlyIII.  It should have polyhedral, but I got rid of that and added ailerons (and flaps).  The flaps will be severe-deflection capable, so I'll be using them in lieu of spoilers as well as for "normal" applications.

Is that a glider?  I don't know much about hobby stuff.

If I lived in or near an area I could do that I would.

However, for now anyway, I'll be limited to thermal soaring.  Not that I mind thermal soaring, I love it!  The challenge of long duration flights with no motor involved is addicting to me.  I can get some good ridge lift along the Mississippi, but it's a two hour drive each way...

When I lived in Missoula I did a LOT of ridge soaring, and honestly it's my favorite.  The dynamic soaring aspect is very alluring as well, but not very easy or "fantastic" around here.  Nobody (other than the turkey vultures) was doing dynamic soaring back when I was in MT.  I'm in flat farm country now, 18 hours east of Missoula.

If I get an opportunity to hit the ridges again, I'll beef up the spar with carbon fiber.  I chose not to on this wing though.

Cool plane, mtnman!

Personally I'd like to get an old scale R/C sailplane some day. A Minimoa would be really nice.

Do you know about this sim, btw: http://www.condorsoaring.com/?

It's an awesome sim if you have any interest at all in soaring at 1:1 scale.

No!  I didn't know about that site...  Saved to favorites for now, I'll have to look into it when I get time...

The first glider I ever built was an Oly II that still has the same monokote on it that I ironed on thirty years ago. Its really good at giving me a neck pain from looking up for hours on end which is probably why I havent flown it for so long.

The Ikarus DG 1000 Challenger (208") is my favorite but it takes five servos in each wing (water flaps spoiler aileron and tip aileron). Not many slopes down here and they started running us off the beaches during tropical storms back around 1985. I hear the best slopes are in S. America where you can get up into the thin air with high wind speeds. One day.
If you like the Sick Puppy Custom Sound Pack the please consider contributing for future updates by sending a months dues to Hitech Creations for account "Chalenge." Every little bit helps.

Very cool . I just love it . Put a camera system on it !
I have been looking at the  OlyIII to put my FatShark system on but I think I am going to go with a ME 163 if I can find one for my FPV.
I have a Dragon Link long range system otw just for it .Got my OSD in yesterday .

Here is what I have my FPV stuff on now but I don't trust foam when I start getting 5 to 10 mile's out so I am going to change bird's .

I like this set up with the GoPro but the camera is not good to use to fly with . Work's fine for HD filming but not to fly with .

BTW; Mtnman , are you the same man me and skyrock use to fly with in the 327th back in 1999 or around there ? I was GW back then .

My first glider was an Olympic 650 that I built in Illinois and took with me when i went out to Montana.  I thermal soared it in IL, and ridge and thermaled it in MT.  It was a great plane!  I modified it out there by reducing the polyhedral, increasing the span, and adding flaps.  Man I loved that thing.  I gave it to a homeless "friend" when I left MT.  He saw RC flying as a sort of spiritual quest thing, but was limited to adding radio gear to the 3$ foamy hand-toss gliders.  Nice guy, but not quite "right" in the head.  A shame too, he was really smart...

I have a friend who's looking at the OlyII.  He bought the OlyII and the Olympic 650, and it looks like he's going to build the 650 first.

Yup, I'm the same guy...

The camera idea will be tried, I've already been playing with it a bit.  It won't be FP stuff, I'm not really looking for that.  I have a Flycamone2 that I play with.  I'd really like to get a small enough system that I can attach it to my birds.  I tried it with the Flycamone2, but it bounces left/right too much when she flaps.  It's a bit heavy too.  And the picture isn't too hot...  Maybe when things get a bit smaller and cheaper...  I'm not willing to dish out big bucks on it, and I'm worried about it getting snagged in brush, etc.

Good to see you still around . I was going to ask if you still had the hawk ..The Gopro is the only choice in camera's right now . That work good in HD . I just can't spend 250 buck's on a camera .
