I've been surf fishing for quite awhile now, and I am better at it than freshwater(who knows why). I'd recommend a 7-9 foot pole with a nice rig and circle hooks, minnows are nice but I had no luck with them this year. I used squid, shrimp, and mullet for bait this year and did really well, also used white shiny's(lure) and pulled them out nice. You're going to New Jersey, IIRC the striper bite is very nice up there. Heres a nice forum for fishing there, http://stripersonline.com/.

Surprisingly, I caught most of my fish around 20-40 yards out, the catch of flounder, spanish, bluefish were nice this year. I'll have pics up sometime this week. Also caught a large ray, around 4-5 feet, and gave me the best fight I have ever had.

My rods for beach fishing.

8 Ft, open faced, 35 LB shock line, 17 lb line, used it for rigs.
7 Ft, open faced, 35 LB shock line(got ripped off :o), 10 Lb line, used it for rigs.
6 Ft, open faced, 20 lb Line, small rigs, lures.
4 ft bass pole, 20 lb shock, 10 lb mono, lures, Caught the most fish with this one, and it was fun as hell  :lol.
4 ft bass pole, 10 lb mono, real small rigs.

on another forum, with not as many avid anglers or new to surf fishing are givin this website, its very nice to get you started.

Thanks guys, heading out tommorow to give it a whirl. Stripers and fluke (flounder ) are really hot right now. Striper run off LBI has slowed down a bit but there are still some around.

Fluke is hot right now, i was speaking to the local bait shop guy and he said 30 or 40 fish days are not uncommon in the bay and off the beach. They're catching them on white jigs, with a Berkley GULP trailer. Clams are also prefered if your looking to sit and let the bait do the work for ya.

No real snook to speak of up here, but the bait prices are the same.....$1.00 per bunker. :D

Tuna trip on hold for a couple of days or so.....boat had a minor mechanical issue, but should be good to go in a day or so, ill be out at the canyons hammering Tuna by Wednesday.

Ill let you gents know how i make out!!

45 year's of fishing and I have to say I like to troll . I use to fish for king fish off of the pier in Destin FL when I did not have the money to go out on a charter boat . My biggest fish to date is a 70 pound red grouper out of Destin with a few kingfish right at that size but that was in the 70's you can not catch kindfish that big any more . So , I went from deep sea fishing to a Crappie Master ..Hope to place in the top 3 this year . Made the top 9 last year .

Lol, I didn't realize or notice where you were going fishing. My mind automatically defaults to thoughts of Florida. Not the Upper Atlantic Coast.

Bunker is a small fish used for bait, sorry gents. A minnow in laymans terms, about 3" to 4" long.

Click below, It will give you an idea of what im talking about. The bunker we use are a tad smaller than whats shown here

http://www.striperspace.com/simages/bunker_bait560.gif

Thunderstorm just came thru down here and dropped the temp outside from 99 to 71 degrees. Fishing gonna be slow for the next day or so i think.
