I've been surf fishing for quite awhile now, and I am better at it than freshwater(who knows why). I'd recommend a 7-9 foot pole with a nice rig and circle hooks, minnows are nice but I had no luck with them this year. I used squid, shrimp, and mullet for bait this year and did really well, also used white shiny's(lure) and pulled them out nice. You're going to New Jersey, IIRC the striper bite is very nice up there. Heres a nice forum for fishing there,

Surprisingly, I caught most of my fish around 20-40 yards out, the catch of flounder, spanish, bluefish were nice this year. I'll have pics up sometime this week. Also caught a large ray, around 4-5 feet, and gave me the best fight I have ever had.
