Pah, pah and thrice pah - how do you think I feel - stuck in the Mojave Desert, 1.5 hours from water (to fish in for clarification) and jonesing badly for a fishing fix!!!!!!!!!!.

 Wow Red,those are some nice fish!  We dont get alot of "big" largemouths up here,the winters really stunt they're growth.

   Have you ever tried a flyrod to go after those Bass??

  I go after smallmouths in the rivers and use a flyrod pretty much all the time for it.  Great fun!

Havent tried fly rods for bass.....................yet

I have fly fished before and it was a blast.

 Red,get yourself a 7 or 8wt. flyrod and have at it!  Lots of streamers work and topwater bugs are a blast.


   Something about the 1 to 1 ratio and pulling in the line by hand that makes it so much fun.

I'll check on that....Looking like surgery on my shoulder so we'll have to see if that happens...but I'll look into a fly rod.

Yes, I use small plastic shad and crappie thunder or other jigs with roadrunner heads.

Here is my rig.  I just added an anchor trolley system yesterday.  I tried it today.  It worked pretty well.




I can slide the anchor point up and down the side of the yak to position me in the wind at the angle I want.



The bouy spool worked really well.  When the two lines are clipped together it locks off.  Its easy to adjust to the depth I need.



Not sure about the claw anchor.  Its very light and compact when folded, but I have rocky bottoms and I almost didn't get back it up once.  I guess I'll go back to a mushroom.


I went out this morning and hook up a couple of small bass but were 1/2" too small. :(

I did get a nice 12" fat crappie.  However, we were having 22mph winds out on the lake and it was beating the crap out of me in my kayak so I called it an early day.  I was really just out to try my anchor.



Oh BTW.  I already had a MisterTwister electric knife and I picked up one of those EZScaler attachments.  I figured it was just a gimmicy thing but I was very impressed with how well it worked.  I just wish they had skipped the knife part I really just want it as a scaler and don't want to nic a finger.  I might try and file off the blade part.

If at all possible, tie a second line to the BOTTOM of the anchor, at the tip. If it is caught on rocks, pull the second line to dislodge it.

Btw, electric fillet knives lose you a lot of meat. To scale a fish, all you need is a spoon. OR you can take an old brush, clean it off, and screw on 4 bottle caps. That'll work to scale anything you need to. If the brush option doesn't work, I'd stick with the electric fish scaler. Everyone has their preference.

ALRIGHT, gents. What is your go-to bait when the fishing gets rough and you just can't seem to get ANYTHING to bite?

It can't be live bait, it much be artificial. I always turn to a good ole' roostertail, black with a golden blade (which for some reason is very hard to come by). I've also heard that the universal go-to is an Eppinger Dardevle spoon, classic red and white. Any thoughts?

White 1/2 ounce Spinner double colorado blade (silver) when things aren't so good....

Lipless 1/2 ounce crank bait

Senko or Teqilua sunrise worm...

These 3 seem to always at least get some bites....

This year so far I've caught fish on the following...

Swim Baits (4 - 6 inch shad color)
Red 1/2 ounce spinner (booyah double silver colorado blade)
White 1/2 ounce spinner (booyah double gold colorado blade)
1/2 ounce Lipless cranks in various colors ( Silver and blue , Sexy shad Silver/yellow/red , Redorange , Firetiger , Sexy shad Chartruese/Red/black , White/Black )

Probably a smaller marabou jig, white and red.  It can be a finesse presentation, and pretty much anything in the lake will bite it.  That might mean you're catching perch that day, but hey, that's better than getting skunked.  Bass do love them too.

I've been using them since I was very young and have tons from the 80s sitting at the house, but all out of the package.  I have no idea what brand they are, or if they're still made, but the Wright & McGill Marabou Jig offered by Cabelas is an extremely close match.
