Decided to go Trout fishing tonight, of course there was a truck parked at the bridge where I was going to go in so I had to find a plan B.  Went to a spot I normally skip because there's a big arse log jam that's a PITA to get through and said screw it.  Wriggled my way through the mess and slogged downstream for about half an hour taking note of how good all the holes I was passing by looked.  Turned around and started fishing back upstream with a spinner, got through a couple holes with not much to show and switched to a spoon.  Fished a couple holes with the spoon and picked up one dink Brown then my reel puked out a huge birds-nest of line so I piss away 15 minutes picking it apart then switch to soft plastics.  As soon as I get that mess cleared up and get back to fishing I'm at a hole that looked exceptional to me on the way in, a deep tight S curve with two trees laying in it.  So I'm hoping that something finally starts going my way, and after making a few casts and missing one small fish I go to open my bail and I hear something go SPLOOSH.  Well that can't be good, look down and one end of the bail on the reel is hanging loose and I can see something silver on the bottom.  Pick up the screw and go to try and put it back and notice the metal roller that the line goes on is missing, dig that out of the sand and get it started back together.  Now I need a screwdriver, the file on my nail clipper should work so I take that out and just for one last cosmic kick in the balls that comes apart at the main pin, but no matter I get the real back in working order.  Caught one and missed a couple more and then I'm reeling in about a 8" Brown when there's a flash behind it and a boil.  Not sure if I saw what I think I just saw I reeled him in nice and slow and twice more he gets hit and when I pull him up into the shallows the bigger fish follows right on his tail until it's 6 feet away then it sees me and slowly turns and swims back out.  I make a few more casts into the hole but he doesn't eat, since he obviously wanted something big and flashy I decided to oblige.  Backed off a bit and put on a chatterbait and on the 3rd cast...

I was thinking he had to be at least 20" when I first saw him but ended up only being a hair over 19" but nice and fat.

Nice perch you have there.  At least that's what we call them.  Ringtail perch.  They're closely related to Walleye and good eating for sure.  Great thing about perch is that they swim in schools, usually of fish their same age, and at a constant depth.  So, once you find one of a size you like you can usually catch quite a few more of roughly the same size at the same depth.

Just got back from Captiva Island in Florida.  Rented a boat there for a couple days and had a blast fishing the Captiva Pass.  Caught many different fish- grouper, snapper, bluefish, small shark, pompano etc...  Action was pretty much non-stop each time we would drift through the pass.  Best part were the dolphins that would wait at the side of the boat for you to release the fish so they could try and eat it.   :)

Wasn't a charter, just rented a boat for two days.  Nothing two big.  But did have some big hits that just ended with the line being cut.  Was using rented tackle.  If we had geared up better I'm sure we would of hooked into to some larger, toothier stuff.  :salute

Awesome Redtop, that looks like a great spot (well except for the temps).

Have a good time and good luck fishing.   :salute

I've been on that lake many times. In the spring it is a beautiful blue. Later in the year there is algea bloom and the water is green. Great recreation area.

Be sure you watch around you well. That is the lake where the woman and her husband were playing on the water and some from the mexican side shot her husband in the head and killed him.

The scenery is great. The lake is very long. There are caves where you can see old indian drawings on the walls.
