Well , this week was my week to go to Wilson . Was all ready to go Tuesday to head out this weekend and my fishing friend fell off a house and like to broke his neck . Sorry for him but he's going to be all right it's just cost me a trip that I had been waiting on all year . Man I going to have to go see someone to get this voodoo off of me or something .

Sorry to hear that Flench - hope he gets better real soon.

Question for anyone/everyone - Hobie Mirage Pro Angler 14 - anyone got any experience with them?

Thinking of making one my main fishing boat - kinda bigger lake canoe to get around to the less fished spots.

Opinions?

Wurz

Edit - or do I go for one of the 16ft aluminium boats, small outboard - again, basically for the bigger lakes and less fished spots?

I get a aluminum boat . I ran lines and hit all the lakes with mine but it was a 10 footer and loved it . Looking for me another one now .
Edit: make use you get one with the 36 inch side's tho . I like to run trot lines out of an aluminum boat where I can hold the boat with the #21 line I use . I got a cool trick a old man showed my father that showed me how to run lines the fast way . I will post a pic later on how it's done .

Every sense I got my big boat I have not even been back in a small boat . Just can't run trot lines out of it so I run jug's out of it . Don't have to worry about the lake getting bad for it will take some bad water .

:aok  jug fishin' man thems some good times :D  We used to jug on a private reservoir in Colorado Springs,  had some problems with people cutting the jugs off, so we used duck decoys instead :devil  I used to run the 6 foot john boat we had and my dad pulled and rebaited.  I was like 12 or so, and our trolling motors forward went out so instead of fixing it I got used to running it backwards.  well Dad got a now motor which forward worked, we went out and had like 18" waves, pulled up next to the line and started pulling it up and rebaiting.  the small boat got turned and I went to turn into waves, well from being used to running motor backwards I turned the wrong way and the hook dad was baiting got pulled into his hand.  we had to push it all the way through.  I wasn't too popular after that for about an hour :lol  we used to use the plates that go under the railroad ties as weights and bicycle innertubes cut in half as kinda shock absorber, so when we pulled the line out never disturbed the weight.  great catch Flench :aok

I don't have a Hobie, but I do have a Tarpon 120 by Wilderness Systems.  I have it rigged for fishing (rod holders, fish finder, etc..) and enjoy fishing from it.  It is peaceful, you can get into places the boats can't, see a lot of nature, no engine/boat maintenance costs  and ya get some exercise.  It's not easy to fish from a kayak, can be kinda cramped but I would recommend one.  Not having to have a paddle with the Hobie would definitely make things easier.  Probably the biggest con to a kayak is that if your not where the fish are you are not getting too far very fast.  So that is where the boat with an outboard comes in handy.  It would be a tough choice if I had to choose one.  I guess it depends on the water you are going to fish.

Thanks Flench, Bug - think I'll wait till we finish off the house etc, but thinking the kayak will be the initial boat, then once things settle down cash wise, I'll grab me another boat for the bigger lakes. It wont get used every week is the concern, as where I live, there are no lakes lol......
Basically, it'll be the once in a blue moon fishing boat, hence going with the kayak initially (I can pop that on top of the truck, so I dont need to trailer etc)

Thanks again fella's, much appreciated.

Now thats what I'm talking about - got bad joints on my elbows (plus a few other places, getting old sucks royally) which is why I'm thinking the leg powered hobie would be better for me personally.

Red, Bug, when fishing yours, would you add a rod holder in front, which you can turn out to either side - basically a trolling rig kinda deal?

Sorry bout all the questions, things just trot across the desert laughingly refered to as my mind lol....

Yes to the holder. I have one there in the middle if you look close....Plus 2 flush mounts just behind the seat and 2 on the basket made of PVC pipe. Here's what I will tell you in my short time yaking....

SEAT!!!  If there is one thing you need it is a comfortable seat....no matter WHAT yak you get. I had an Ocean Prowler 13 that was nice enough...rod holders and all...tracked pretty well and was faster than the one I have now....BUT...after beinig in it for just a couple hours my butt was tired...and no matter what you do its uncomfortable. All cause the seat wasnt good. In this one I have now...I kid you not...I have spent 5-6 hours at a time in it and never got really uncomfortable other than my crap knees hurtin....

don't get anything less than a 12 footer...MAYBE an 11 footer but nothing less....

Get a Sit On Top....

Wilderness systems....or Native....are pretty good mid line yaks....

Get a light paddle if possible....they can be expensive but with elbows or such they are certainly better than you think. Yak fishing is great....I enjoy it alot. My Bass boat gets its use on big lakes...where going from one spot to another can be miles...I use my Yak in small lakes...ponds...a couple of larger lakes but dont paddle far to my spots.

Its relaxing...Youll love it....I was nervous about it but now after a year or so I am totally comfortable in it and fish it ALOT.

Thanks Redtop, thats really useful. Agree on the seat bit, thats one of the reasons I'm looking at the hobie lol....

http://www.hobiefishing.com/mirage/mirage-pro-angler-14/)

I can get pretty much most of my fishing gear (I always carry way too much lol) and the seat on it looks like it would be comfortable for extended use.

Will be getting paddles with it as well (no reverse gear doh)
